ALWAYS A PRINCESS BEAUTICIAN BICKERSONS BIOFUEL BLIND LUCK CHAMPAGNE D'ORO CONNIE AND MICHAEL DEVIL MAY CARE MS VANENZZA NEGLIGEE SHE BE WILD ZILVA ALWAYS A PRINCESS (KY) Trainer: Bob Baffert Owner: Arnold Zetcher Breeder: Arnold Zetcher LLC Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) (Candy Stripes, Dissemble (GB)) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Gabriellina Gioff (GB) (Ashkalani (IRE), Paola Quatraro (IRE)) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 2-0-6-0-0 (8) 1.67 Foal Date: April 2, 2007 Always a Princess broke her maiden first time out and was favored in the Oak Leaf. Oct. 4, Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes, Santa Anita, 1 1/16 Mile. In a stretch-running winning move, Blind Luck and Tyler Baze covered 1 1-16 mile in 1:43.19 to win the Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths at 7-2 odds. The pacesetting Always a Princess finished second for Bob Baffert; Always a Princess led all the way along the rail under Garrett Gomez until getting beat late. East Coast shipper Bickersons finished third in her first race on a synthetic surface. It Tiz was fourth in the 11-horse field. Baffert said he was looking for Always a Princess to hit the board to get into the Breeders' Cup. "She got a little tired at the end, but she did all the running," he said. "This will set her up perfect for the Breeders' Cup. Gomez was equally optimistic about the future for Always a Princess. “It’s hard to go wire-to-wire out there, especially on a horse like this that has only run the one time," he said. "She’s very talented. I’m excited about her. I liked the way she did everything. She didn’t throw in the towel. She fought herself back into second after being all the way back to third, and she galloped out nicely. Hopefully, this will set her up to end up in the winner’s circle next time.” BEAUTICIAN (KY) Trainer: Ken McPeek Owner: Peter J. Callahan Breeder: G. David Shashura & Diane Shashura Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Dehere (Deputy Minister, Sister Dot) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Caroni (Rubiano, Douce Carrotte) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 3-8-11-2-0 (24) 2.20 Foal Date: Feb. 22, 2007 July 29, Grade III Schuylerville Stakes, Saratoga, Six Furlongs. Beautician, second choice at 7-2 in the field of nine, closed from seventh to get a distant second, 6 3/4 lengths ahead of Cowgirl Mally. But it was Hot Dixie Chick (8-5) who won. She pressed the early pace set by first-time starter Stormandaprayer through fractions of :22.02 and :45.50 over a track listed as good. She moved out midway on the turn to take the lead in upper stretch and won drawing away by 6 1/4 lengths, with a final time of 1:10.18. Ken McPeek, trainer: “Naturally, we wanted to win, but I was pleased. She galloped out good, she wants to go further than that, and she hadn’t run in two months. We’re real, real optimistic. Probably the Spinaway (is next). We’ll let her come out of the race and decide.” Kent Desormeaux: "She was handy and had a winning move around the far turn, but Hot Dixie Chick was just too good today. When I let my horse go, I thought I was sitting on a winner. At the quarter pole, I thought we had her, but Hot Dixie Chick had too much left." Sept. 6, Grade I Spinaway, Saratoga, Seven Furlongs. The undefeated and heavy favorite Hot Dixie Chick sat just back and to the inside of the pace set by long shot Bickersons through a half-mile in :45.19. Meanwhile, Beautician and Kent Desormeaux stayed in close range on the outside. Hot Dixie Chick and Robby Albarado then scooted through an opening on the rail leaving the turn and pulled away to win by 1 3/4 length in 1:22.28. Beautician, second to Hot Dixie Chick in the Schuylerville, played second fiddle again, albeit 8 1/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Bickersons. Ken McPeek, trainer of Beautician: “We're exactly where we want to be. We have a couple of big races coming up: the Alcibiades at Keeneland] and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. We want to get her at two turns. To be top 2-year-old filly, you have to win the big ones. I didn't want to overdo it today. I wanted to keep her fresh. She's a good filly. She's special to us. We needed a race over the track the last time, so this was an improvement.” Kent Desormeaux, aboard Beautician: “I am thrilled with the effort by Mr. Callahan’s horse, I can only imagine what [Hot Dixie Chick’s connections] must think of the winner. These are two serious racehorses. The winner has to be a super horse because my filly was ready.” Oct. 9, Grade I Alcibiades Stakes, Keeneland, 1 1/16 Mile. Beautician finished fifth, with a difficult trip for her. Whether it was of her own making is up for debate. Negligee, recently purchased by Sovereign Stables, proved a profitable venture by winning at 12-1 odds--and punching her ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Rounding the turn into the shortened home stretch of the track's 1 1/16-mile configuration, favored She Be Wild, at 6-5, had a one-length lead and looked like a winner. But she couldn't hold off the late-charging Negligee, who was in fifth position entering the far turn. The winner prevailed by a half-length. Amen Hallelujah, who was also recently purchased by IEAH Stables, finished third, another 2 1/4 lengths back. Beautician, the second choice at 2-1, finished fifth after being steadied in tight quarters with a sixteenth of a mile to run. Ridden by Rajiv Maragh, who won three races on the day, Negligee was timed in 1:43.76 after initial moderate fractions of :24.32, :48.97 and 1:13.58. Oct. 10 NOTE: Beautician is still Breeders' Cup-bound. “We are still going to go,” said trainer Ken McPeek. “She just had an unlucky trip. That’s racing. She deserves to go.” BICKERSONS (ON) Trainer: Kelly Breen Owner: George and Lori Hall Breeder: Robert G. Harvey Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Silver Deputy (Deputy Minister (CAN), Silver Valley) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Dancehall Floozy (Paramount Jet, Lil Ol Gal) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 5-0-3-0-0 (8) 4.33 Foal Date: April 19, 2007 Bickersons was a gritty third behind top-rated 2-year-old filly Hot Dixie Chick in Saratoga’s Grade I Spinaway Stakes on Sept. 6 after setting a torrid early pace in the seven-furlong competition. Oct. 4, Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes, Santa Anita, 1 1/16 Mile. Bickersons laid back in third behind Always a Princess. She almost got up for second, but Always a Princess outlasted her by a neck. Joe Bravo, aboard Bickersons: “It was a question mark when you run over synthetics for the first time, and this filly had her head about herself. She loved the surface. She got a bit tired, but I don’t blame her. She ran a really, really big effort.” BIOFUEL (KY) Trainer: Reade Baker Owner: Brereton Jones Breeder: Brereton Jones Sire (Sire's Sire, Dam): Stormin Fever (Storm Cat, Pennant Fever) Dam (Dam's Sire, Dam): Ms. Cornstalk (Indian Charlie, Upper Dancer) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 3-1-5-1-0 (10) 1.86 Foal Date: Feb. 12, 2007 Biofuel came into the Mazarine after a fourth-place finish behind Fanny Freud in the Aug. 15 Ontario Debutante at six furlongs and a less-than-impressive turf race. Oct. 11, Grade III Mazarine Stakes, Woodbine, 1 1/16 Mile. Biofuel, a 23-1 longshot, won the race. She trailed the field, then went wide, and then drew off to a 4 1/2-length win over seven others, including second finisher Bay to Bay, who'd already earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with a win of the Grade III Natalma Stakes. The winner was timed in 1:44.27, a second faster than her male counterpart ran in winning the Grade III Grey Stakes the following day. Eurico Da Silva rode the winner. Winning trainer Reade Baker: "She's a nice, sound, healthy filly. The grass race was a toss. The sprint was a toss." BLIND LUCK (KY) Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer Owner: Mark DeDomenico LLC, JCRP Stable and Jerry Hollendorfer Breeder: Fairlawn Farm Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Pollard's Vision (Carson City, Etats Unis) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Lucky One (Best of Luck, Twilight Spectre) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 10-10-7-1-0 (28) 5.22 Foal Date: April 20, 2007 Blind Luck broke her maiden by 13 1/4 lengths over 4 1/2 furlongs at Calder in June. Subsequently transferred to the Hollendorfer barn, the Pollard’s Vision filly won an allowance race at Del Mar by 3 1/4 lengths Sept. 5, Grade I Darley Debutante Stakes, Del Mar, Seven Furlongs. Mi Sueno came into the race highly credentialed and was favored at even money. She ran like that, winning by a length over the closing Blind Luck (4-1). The winner was timed in 1:23.78. Here's the chart call: "Blind Luck a bit slow to begin and bumped in the early stages, settled inside, came out on the turn and five wide into the stretch, drifted inward some in midstretch but finished well." Tyler Baze, aboard Blind Luck: “She’s a really nice filly. If she ran straight today, I win easy. But she’s so green; she was all over the place. But, oh, is she talented. Very talented. She’s the kind that can win the Breeders’ Cup." Oct. "She was a little keen at the break and it took me a moment to get her to settle," Baze said. "Things got a little tight around the first turn, but besides that, we had a clean trip. Turning for home, the seas parted and she ran great to the wire." The pacesetting Always a Princess finished second for Bob Baffert; Always a Princess led all the way along the rail under Garrett Gomez until getting beat late. East Coast shipper Bickersons finished third in her first race on a synthetic surface. It Tiz was fourth in the 11-horse field. Jerry Hollendorfer trains the winner. "After she broke her maiden (at Calder), the owner offered her for sale and we bought her right away," Hollendorfer said. "She was just a nice big filly, and she won so easy. "I try to take these races one at a time, and this was the next step for her. She looks like she’s a pretty nice filly. She had a lot of trouble in her last race, maybe a little more than it looked like, so I thought if she had gotten a good break and didn’t get bumped down at Del Mar, I think she possibly could have won that race. Today, she came away and got fairly clear and rated down on the inside, so it wasn’t a problem for her once she got out of there.” CHAMPAGNE D'ORO (KY) Trainer: John Daley Owner: Southern Equine Stable LLC & Mike Smith Breeder: Liberation Farm Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado (IRE), Cappucino Bay) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Champagne Glow (Saratoga Six, Champagne Ginny) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 3-2-11-2-0 (18) 1.40 Foal Date: Feb. 7, 2007 She's well thought-of in her barn, After a second, third and fourth in a maiden special weight, the listed Cinderalla Stakes and the listed Laudaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park, she went back into maiden company and won at Del Mar going 5 1/2 furlongs. For reasons not entirely clear to us, she was disqualified from collecting the purse money. She was then ambitiously placed again, running against boys in the Grade I Del Mar Futurity. She finished eighth, beaten 6 3/4 lengths by Lookin at Lucky. CONNIE AND MICHAEL (KY) Trainer: Ken McPeek Owner: Brooklyn Boyz Stables (Anthony Bonomo) Breeder: Needham-Betz Thoroughbreds, Inc./Kidder/Blackburn/Lamantia/Halecky Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Roman Ruler (Fusaichi Pegasus, Silvery Swan) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Detect (Devil's Bag, Find) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 10-1-11-2-0 (24) 2.20 Foal Date: March 22, 2007 She made Breeders' Cup off one career race, but it was an impressive-looking one at Keeneland. Connie and Michael broke her maiden at first asking on Oct. 17 at Keeneland going seven furlongs. Her win came from the No. 12 post position, and she won by 7 3/4 lengths, timed in 1:22.74. She led throughout after building a two-length lead at the first call. DEVIL MAY CARE (KY) Trainer: Todd Pletcher Owner: Glencrest Farm LLC Breeder: Diamond A Racing Corp. Devil May Care held off the late-charging Awesome Maria by a head, and Nonna Mia, who led them all into the stretch, finished third by another 4 1/4 lengths in the one-mile, one-turn race at Belmont Park. The winner was timed in 1:35.07 under John Velazquez. The win was an upset of Awesome Maria, who was favored at even money. At 5-1 odds, Devil May Care paid $12.80 to win in only her second career start. The Frizette was a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Whether Devil May Care will make the trip was an open question at the time. Todd Pletcher, winning trainer: “We’ve thought a lot of this filly all along. She showed up and ran a huge race for her second time out. She never gets tired. It was a big effort. The big question (about the Breeders’ Cup) is how she will transfer her form to a synthetic surface. She certainly ran well enough to (consider) it. She was very professional for a second-time starter.” John Velazquez, winning jockey: “She didn’t break as good as I wanted to, but she recuperated and got into a good spot right away. I was biding my time between horses on the turn and then I saw (Touching Beauty) started lugging in and stopped, and I had to make a premature move where I didn’t want to go too soon, but I didn’t want to get blocked in there. Then once I got her going, I had to keep her mind busy and she finished really well.” MS VANENNZA (KY) Trainer: Juan Vazquez Owner: Florence Patitucci Breeder: Tenlane Farm Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Successful Appeal (Valid Appeal, Successful Dancer) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Speaking of Time (Gilded Time, Terry's Wild Again) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 7-3-4-0-0 (14) 6.00 Foal Date: March 23, 2007 Ms Vanennza broke her maiden in the Blue Hen Stakes at Delaware Park on Oct. 3. She broke her maiden at first asking going five furlongs at Woodbine in late July, then finished a close second to Fanny Freud in the $150,000, six-furlong Ontario Debutante on Aug. 15. Oct. 9, Grade I Alcibiades Stakes, Keeneland, 1 1/16 Mile. Negligee, recently purchased by Sovereign Stables, proved a profitable venture by winning--and punching her ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Rounding the turn into the shortened home stretch of the track's 1 1/16-mile configuration, favored She Be Wild, at 6-5, had a one-length lead and looked like a winner. “She didn’t break as fast like a true sprinter, so that was good,” said Maragh. “She kind of relaxed and got behind horses and was pretty much settled behind horses so it made her finish better.” SHE BE WILD (KY) Trainer: Wayne Catalano Owner: Nancy Mazzoni Breeder: M. Sept. 5, Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie, Arlington Park, One Mile. At 4-5 odds, She Be Wild was rated off the rail a bit off the pace, split horses in the stretch and quickly drew off to win easily by 5 3/4 lengths under Junior Alvarado. The daughter of Offlee Wild got the mile in 1:38.67, nearly a full second faster than the time of Dixie Band, her male stable mate that won the Arlington-Washington Futurity earlier on the card. Tiz Miz Sue ran second in the nine-horse field, a neck clear of Screen Legend. Deceptive Glory, Suzanne, That's Whatshesaid, Gabba Girl, Highest Power and Attempt to Name completed the order of finish. "She's a nice little filly and we're very happy with her," trainer Catalano said. "Everything went our way today, and she came into the race good. Once in awhile, you have to take shots and do things (referring to running her for a $40,000 claiming price). The opportunity came, and we needed to get a race into her. We were fighting some shins, and we didn't want to miss a race with her, and that's how that came about." Oct. 9, Grade I Alcibiades Stakes, Keeneland, 1 1/16 Mile. She Be Wild finished second at 6-5 odds. Negligee, recently purchased by Sovereign Stables, proved a profitable venture by winning--and punching her ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Garrett Gomez, who rode She Be Wild, said, “She ran really well. I was closer than I wanted to be, but the pace wasn’t all that enthusiastic.” Oct. 10 NOTE: Trainer Catalano said She Be Wild was fine the morning after the race. “She ran hard,” he said. “She didn’t get the trip we wanted. She didn’t settle.” Catalano said the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies remained a possibility. “The owners want to go,” he said. “We’ll see what she says.” ZILVA (KY) Trainer: Graham Motion Owner: Augustin Stables Breeder: Augustin Stable Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Successful Appeal (Valid Appeal, Successful Dancer) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Spellmaker (Storm Cat, Sofitina) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 6-2-8-0-0 (16) 3.00 Foal Date: March 15, 2007 She was entered in the Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile Fillies Turf, with the latter being first preference. Stretched out to 1 1/16 mile on the turf, Zilva won her third start, timed in 1:42 4/5 at Saratoga. She was entered in the Grade I Alcibiades at Keeneland, and that resulted in a fourth-place finish, beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Negligee. She split horses to finish a head out of Amen Hallelujah's third.
