Courageous Cat raced once last year, in September, then was given break until late March. He ran at Gulfstream Park on Florida Derby day, going a mile on dirt and finishing fourth to Jacoby's Run.

On Kentucky Derby day, he was at Belmont Park and ran second--but beaten a dozen lengths by Precursor on a race taken off the turf.

From then on, it was turf racing for Courageous Cat. He broke his maiden first time on the grass, yielding at the time, then won a listed stake, both races at Belmont Park.

Sent to Saratoga, he won the Grade II Hall of Fame Stakes, timed in a very fast 1:45 4/5 for 1 1/8 mile on firm turf.

He then took on Take the Points in the Grade II Jamaica on Oct. 10, finishing third by only three parts of a length to that one. Straight Story was second. The winner was timed in 1:48 2/5 on firm turf.

COURT VISION (KY)

As a 2-year-old, Court Vision won the Grade II Remsen at Aqueduct and the following spring finished third in the Grade I Wood Memorial. After poorly contesting the Kentucky Derby, his connections moved him to the turf, where he finished second to Gio Ponti in the Grade II Virginia Derby. As the year went on, he won the Grade II Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park and then the Grade I Hollywood Derby in November. In 2009, he lost five straight grade I races, all longer than a mile.

Court Vision underwent surgery July 23 at the Ruffian Equine Medical Center to remove a high-channeled testicle that the owner's spokesperson said had been bothering the horse for a long time. “We hesitated to do something about it,” Michael Iavarone said. “When you’re dealing with a horse like Court Vision, you hesitate because of his value as a stallion, but we took him to the Ruffian hospital and Dr. Patti Hogan said it’s got to come out. It’s killing him. So, he’s a ridgling now.”

Iavarone said Court Vision was ready for a top effort in the Kelso.

Oct. 4, Grade II Kelso Handicap, Belmont Park, One Mile (T). The race was taken off the turf due to soggy conditions, and Court Vision was scratched.

Oct. 10, Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile, Keeneland, One Mile (T).  Court Vision (9-2) outdueled longshot Karelian (10-1) to the wire to win in 1:38.68 on turf rated soft.

Karelian led the field through very slow fractions of :25.40, :50.45 and 1:14.99. The only horse to challenge him down the lane was Court Vision, newly rejuvenated since a July 23 procedure to remove a high-channeled testicle. This year, Court Vision had been winless in five straight grade I races, all longer than a mile.

“We hesitated to do something about it,” IEAH's Michael Iavarone said earlier in the week. “When you’re dealing with a horse like Court Vision, you hesitate because of his value as a stallion, but we took him to the Ruffian hospital and Dr. Patti Hogan said it’s got to come out. It’s killing him. So, he’s a ridgling now.”

Formerly trained by Bill Mott, the win went to Rick Dutrow, Jr., who saddled Court Vision for the first time. Robby Albarado handled the reins.

Mr. Sidney and Battle of Hastings never threatened and finished third and fourth, respectively. Favored Justenuffhumor, at 7-5, ran as if he did not like the soft going and finished well back of the top four. He trailed the field down the backstretch.

Michael Iavarone, spokesperson fo IEAH Stables, owner of Court Vision in partnership with John A.
Roberts’ Resolute Group Stables: “You buy horses for days just like this. This is just a dream come true, and we’re just happy to be a part of it. (The mile distance) is probably going to be his game, so we might as well play it.”

Iavarone attend the races at Keeneland accompanied by a bodyguard.

Robby Albarado, rider of winner Court Vision: “He was very close for him, within himself, doing it easy. I figured the fractions were slow and I knew this horse would finish up big, and he did. He had faced some quality horses in the past, including Gio Ponti. He’s got quite a bit of back class.”

Aug. 2, Grade II Fourstardave Handicap, Saratoga, 1 1/16 Mile (T). Cowboy Cal set the pace but couldn't hold it and finished third.

After rearing in the gate, Justenuffhumor sat well off early fractions of :23.91 and :47.63 set by favored Cowboy Cal, then powered through in the stretch to hit the wire in 1:42.83 over turf listed as good.

In second 2 1/2 lengths back was Mambo Meister, who rallied strongly to finish a half-length better than Cowboy Cal. Cosmonaut was next, followed by Veiled Prophet, Wesley, Interpatation, Kip Deville and Papa Bear.

Ramon Dominguez, jockey of Cowboy Cal: "He traveled well throughout the race. He took on the pressure and he responded in the early stages. He tried to go out a little bit. He has done that in the past. Still, he fought hard and kept on trying through the end."

John Velazquez said this about Cowboy Cal on Aug. 23, looking ahead to the Grade II Bernard Baruch:

“I leave him alone for the most part, and he’s going to win anyway,” the jockey said. “If I try to do anything I want, he’ll fight me. He’s probably better following somebody, better than being on the pace. If you try to get him back, there’s no way. He’s very talented, just very difficult.”

Aug. 28, Grade II Bernard Baruch Handicap, Saratoga, 1 1/8 Mile (T). Justenuffhumor (4-5) scored his sixth straight victory, closing with a furious late rush to catch Cowboy Cal (3-1) at the wire.

Justenuffhumor sat well off early fractions of :23.22, :46.94, and 1:11.85 set by Cowboy Cal, and then launched his bid down the middle of the stretch to collar the front-runner for a half-length victory. Cowboy Cal, under John Velazquez, was 2 ¾ lengths in front of Sette E Mezzo.

Justenuffhumor’s winning time was 1:47.38 over a turf course rated firm.

“He gave me everything he had. He goes out there and tries each time. He's so strong. He brings me out to the lead each time. I'm not going to fight him and hold him back because he'll get upset. Still, he was game out there. I'm not going to make any excuses,” said John Velazquez, who rode Cowboy Cal.

Trainer Pletcher: "He ran super – tough beat. We’ll either go to Keeneland for the Shadwell Turf Mile (on Oct. 10) or California for one of the prep races out there.  We’ll see.”

Oct. 10, Grade II Oak Tree Mile, Santa Anita, One Mile (T).
Cowboy Cal and Garrett Gomez weren't necessarily looking for the lead, but when things worked out that way, they made the best of it.

Covering fractions of :23.46, :46.09 and 1:09 flat, followed by Monterey Jazz--whom some thought would be the pacessetter--nothing could catch Cowboy Cal, who hit the finish line in 1:33.13.

Global Hunter ran mid-pack in the field of eight, and he closed well to finish second, beaten a half-length. However, the finish didn't feel quite that close.

Whatsthescript wheeled out off the turn and didn't quicken toward home as neatly as needed. He finished well to take third, beaten 1 1/4 length.

Todd Pletcher assistant Mike McCarthy about Cowboy Cal: “This horse answers the question every time. He keeps on showing up, and he’s definitely worthy of a Grade I (win) at some point, hopefully, a month from now. The strategy was kind of to take what came easily. Monterey Jazz got off a little slow, and we got lucky.”

Garrett Gomez, aboard Cowboy Cal: “I could see (Monterey Jazz) was acting up in the gate and I wanted to see how he came out of there. I thought, ‘If my horse breaks, I’ll just let him roll and see what happens.’ As it turned out, we broke good and I decided if I could get a length in front to the first turn and tighten it up some, they’d have to commit if they wanted to press me. They backed off, and so we were able to get a fairly okay (quarter and a little faster half. He was drifting out some in the stretch, but he ran great.”

Looking at the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Sept. 26, Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Ascot, One Mile (T). Delegator finished third in a four-horse field, beaten 4 1/2 lengths to a time of 1:38.82 on turf rated good to firm. The winner, Rip Van Winkle, is headed for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The race put his record at three wins, three seconds and a third in nine starts.

In his prior race, Delegator won the Group 2 Totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood, timed in 1:41.54 on ground rated good, defeating six others, including Zacinto, who finished second in the Queen Elizabeth.

Back on May 2, Zacinto finished second to Sea the Stars by 1 1/2 length in the Group 1 Stanjames.com 2000 Guineas Stakes at Goodwood. Sea the Stars traveled that mile on good turf in 1.35.88.

Ferneley had five wins in 25 starts heading into the Del Mar Mile. Most recently, he'd finished third to Colonel John in the Wickerr Stakes.

Aug. 29, Grade I Del Mar Mile, Del Mar, One Mile (T). Ferneley, benefiting from a beautifully-timed ride by Joel Rosario, swept to the lead in the upper stretch and ran on strongly to win by 1 1/2 length, timed in 1:33.11. He was sent to the gate as the 5-1 second choice.

Allcansayis Wow and Lethal Heat, 4-year-old fillies in a field of male horses, were second and third, separated by a half-length, with Victor's Cry fourth in the field of nine. Monterey Jazz, the 4-5 favorite under David Flores, raced prominently until the stretch and then faded badly to come in seventh.

Ferneley, owned by the of David and Ian O'Rourke of Paris, Kentucky and conditioned by Ben Cecil, was scoring his sixth victory in 26 starts. First money of $120,000 increased the horse's earnings to $405,824.

Joel Rosario: “I had a good, good trip. I kept him down inside and was trying to save ground. I had my eye on (Monterey Jazz). I knew he was the one to beat. I was hoping some of those horses up front would engage him; they did. When I came out and around and I saw (Monterey Jazz) falling back, I knew I had a big shot.

"He’s a really nice horse. His race the other day (third to Colonel John in the Wickerr July 31) here was a good one. He got beat by a nice horse that day. But he’s nice, too.”

Ben Cecil: “He ran really wide last time, but maybe that helped him this time. He seemed to be just right for this race. The only instructions I gave the rider were to try to save all the ground he could. Of course, then he was about eight wide going into the first turn because everybody took back. But Joel rode him perfectly after that.”

Sept. 19, Grade I Woodbine Mile, Woodbine, One Mile (T). Ventura (2-1) became the first female to win the race after rallying from ninth at the head of the lane to outbattle Ferneley (6-1), who also came from back in the field under Rafael Bejarano. Ventura and Garrett Gomez beat Ferneley by a length.

The course was playing fast, and Ventura's time of 1:32.04 was just one-fifth of a second off the course record of 1:31.84 set by Royal Regalia in 2004.

Grand Adventure (21-1) went to the front, taking the field through a quarter in :23.55 and a half in :46.03. He led after three-quarters in 1:09.08, but was about to be swallowed up as the field turned for home.

Bribon (2-1) went inside to launch his stretch assault but faded slightly in the final sixteenth to finish fifth, nosed out by Sterwins (9-1), who closed from tenth, and Jungle Wave (15-1), who was third in the early going.  Meanwhile, Ventura, who had been allowed to lag in ninth throughout, was pushed outside by Gomez for the stretch run and exploded in mid-stretch, collaring the leaders and drawing away to the impressive score.

GLADIATORUS (KY)
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor
Owner: Godolphin Stable
Breeder: Azienda Agricola le Ferriere di Raponi Giampaolo
Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Silic (FR) (Sillery, Balletomane (IRE))
Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Gmaasha (IRE) (Kris (GB), Al Bahathri)
Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 7-0-9-3-1 (20) 1.35
Age: 4

His sire, Silic, won the 1999 Mile at Gulfstream Park from the outside post.

Gladiatorus easily won the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free by 3 1/4 lengths in March, then ran off the board in three Group 1's in Europe, including the Prix du Moulin and the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot--before winning Italy's Group I Premio Vittorio di Capua by 4 1/2 lengths on Oct. 11.

Gladiatorus had been pointed to the Grade I Arlington Million in August, but he missed it after developing a corn on his foot, according to his connections.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford: "It was good to see Gladiatorus come back to form, and he has come out of the race in good form. At the moment the plan is to go for the Breeders' Cup Mile, where he will be joined by Delegator, with Mastery running in the Marathon.

"The team of American horses for the Breeders' Cup is likely to be decided next week," Crisford said on Oct. 15.

“I think she is superior to Miesque as she is better in the head. She has always been a little naughty at the stalls and that is the only fault she has.”--Trainer Freddie Head on defending Breeders’ Cup TVG Mile winner Goldikova. Head rode Miesque to consecutive victories in the Mile in 1987 and 1988.

Defending Breeders' Cup Mile champion Goldikova answered some questions in the July 8 Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. She had run seventh in the May 17 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp.

She took the lead with two furlongs left to run and won by a half-length over Heaven Sent. Spacious was third. Goldikova won for the seventh time in 11 starts. Trainer Head said he'd return her to the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Aug. 2, Group 1 Prix Rothschild, Deauville, One Mile (T).
Goldikova won easily, by 1 1/2-length, under Olivier Peslier up. Stablemate Only Green set the early pace. Goldikova took the lead two furlongs out and finished in 1:35.70 over soft going.

Trainer Freddie Head: "Goldikova will be back at Deauville in a fortnight's time for the Jacques Le Marois, and her ultimate target will be another attempt to win the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita. We have not decided the program in between these two races."

He mentioned the Moulin de Longchamp, the Queen Elizabeth II and the Sun Chariot as options.

August 16, Group I Prix Jacques le Marois, Deauville, One Mile (T).  On ground rated good, Goldikova beat Aqlaam by six lengths in the Jacques le Marois, and Aqlaam came back win the Group I Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Racing Post wrote that the "time of 1:33.50 is a second quicker than any previous winner of the race - a roll of honour that includes the likes of Dubawi, Dubai Millennium, Spinning World and Miesque."

The Marois chart call: "Reluctant to load, tracked leaders, led over 2f out, pushed along, clear when given two slaps in final furlong, ran on strongly."

Oct. 2, Group 1 Total Prix de la Foret, Longchamp, Seven Furlongs (T). Goldikova could only finish third--albeit beaten less than a length--but the outstanding filly was still set to defend her crown in the Breeders’ Cup Mile--probably.

The four-year-old kicked for home in good time but was caught in the closing stages to finish third, just over half a length behind Varenar.

It was said that Bookmakers still rated her an odds-on chance to win the Mile after this loss.

Trainer Head said: "I don’t know what happened. They went a gallop, but that is the name of the game. She didn't quicken. Turning into the straight, she did not pick up and when he asked her, she stayed on at the one pace.

"She might have used herself too much early, but you can't say for sure. For the moment, she is going to the Breeders' Cup. But nothing is definite."

Jockey Oliver Peslier added: "She was a little bit flat today, but I think she is going to be OK for the Breeders’ Cup."

JUSTENUFFHUMOR (KY)
Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Owner: Darley
Breeder: Mt. Brilliant Farm
Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Distorted Humor (Forty Niner, Danzig's Beauty)
Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Justenuffheart (Broad Brush, Kitten's First)
Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 6-9-14-0-1 (30) 2.75
Age: 4

Justenuffhumor entered the Fourstardave undefeated in four turf starts.

Aug. 2, Grade II Fourstardave Handicap, Saratoga, 1 1/16 Mile (T). After rearing in the gate, Justenuffhumor, ridden by Alan Garcia, sat well off early fractions of :23.91 and :47.63 set by favored Cowboy Cal, then powered through in the stretch to hit the wire in 1:42.83 over turf listed as good.

In second 2 1/2 lengths back was Mambo Meister, who rallied strongly to finish a half-length better than Cowboy Cal. Cosmonaut was fourth, followed by Veiled Prophet, Wesley, Interpatation, Kip Deville and Papa Bear.

Justenuffhumor racked up his fifth straight win, with the Fourstardave his first in a stakes race.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin: “He’s run that way every time. We have to keep stepping up; we’ll obviously look at the Bernard Baruch. Alan rode him great, and the gate crew has done a good job; he’s a difficult horse at the gate.  I’m just thankful that we’re training at Greentree (artificial surface), not to miss any works with this horse during that rainy weather – it helps.”

Alan Garcia: “My horse was nice and quiet and relaxed - by the three-eighths pole, I was only looking for the hole to run to.”

Aug. 28, Grade II Bernard Baruch Handicap, Saratoga, 1 1/8 Mile (T). Justenuffhumor (4-5) scored his sixth straight victory, closing with a furious late rush to catch Cowboy Cal (3-1) at the wire.

Ridden by Alan Garcia, Justenuffhumor sat well off early fractions of :23.22, :46.94, and 1:11.85 set by Cowboy Cal, and then launched his bid down the middle of the stretch to collar the front-runner for a half-length victory. Cowboy Cal, under John Velazquez, was 2 ¾ lengths in front of Sette E Mezzo.

Justenuffhumor’s winning time was 1:47.38 over a turf course rated firm. It was his sixth straight win on turf. His only poor performance came in his first race, when he was ninth on Polytrack at Keeneland in 2008.

“It’s a special horse that can make that move,” said trainer McLaughlin, who took the 2007 and 2008 editions of the Baruch with Shakis. “I haven’t been around too many that if you can get them in the gate, they’ll find a way to get to the wire first, and this is one of those horses.”

“I knew he’d wait to the quarter pole to give the best he had and he showed he was the best horse,” said Garcia. “It was a good run.

Oct. 10, Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile, Keeneland, One Mile (T).
Justenuffhumor, who can be a handful in the gate, acted pretty well. But he finished sixth of seven after trailing the field most of the race. Favored Justenuffhumor, favored at 7-5, ran as if he did not like the soft going and finished well back of the top four.

Formerly trained by Mr. Sidney's conditioner Bill Mott, Court Vision's win went to Rick Dutrow, Jr., who saddled Court Vision for the first time. Robby Albarado handled the reins.

Mr. Sidney and Battle of Hastings never threatened and finished third and fourth, respectively.

Neal McLaughlin, assistant trainer of sixth-place finisher and beaten favorite Justenuffhumor: “He absolutely hated the track today and didn’t handle it at all. I knew he was in a lot of trouble right from the beginning. He is usually a lot closer to the pace, but he just didn't take to the track at all. I don’t know if we are going to the Breeders’ Cup, we will have to wait and see what Sheikh Mohammad al Maktoum says. But we’re ready if he wants to go. As far as I’m concerned you can throw this race out. And obviously we wouldn’t get a soft track out in California if we decide to
go, so that’s good.”

Alan Garcia, jockey of Justenuffhumor: “He just hated the track and never had a chance. I couldn’t get him closer and when I asked him to run, he had nothing.”

Oct. 11 NOTE: “At least we didn’t find out that he doesn’t like the ‘firm’ because that is what he is going to be seeing a lot of in California,” McLaughlin said. “I knew we were in trouble early when he dropped back and just took himself out of it.”

Karelian entered the Shadwell Turf Mile off nearly a year layoff.

Rajiv Maragh rode Karelian.

Mr. Sidney and Battle of Hastings never threatened and finished third and fourth, respectively. Favored Justenuffhumor, at 7-5, ran as if he did not like the soft going and finished well back of the top four. He trailed the field down the backstretch.

Rusty Arnold, trainer of second-place finisher Karelian: “He ran great. We’re so proud of him, especially coming off the year layoff. I don’t know if we’ll get in now, but our only reason for coming here today was to try and make the Breeders’ Cup.”

Rajiv Maragh, rider of second-place finisher Karelian: “They didn’t give me a lot of instructions before the race, but they told me what the horse is all about. The pace was very slow so I just let him go out and I was able to slow it down. I knew I was going to have a lot left when they came to challenge me. He tried to the best of his ability. Unfortunately we came out second best, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Truthfully, I didn’t think I’d won it and I was congratulating Robby after we crossed the finish line.”

Oct. 11 NOTE:
“Another inch, and we’d know where we would be going next,” trainer Arnold said. “We knew we had to win yesterday (to go the Breeders’ Cup) because he had not run in a year and had no points.

“We are going to talk it over, but the River City (Nov. 27 at Churchill Downs) would be the most logical if we stay here. This time of year, the weather is always a concern. We didn’t really look much past yesterday.”

July 4, Grade II American Handicap, Hollywood Park, 1 1/8 Mile (T). He finished third at 6-5 odds.

July 25, Grade I Eddie Read Handicap, Del Mar, 1 1/8 Mile. Whatsthescript (5-2) finished third, three parts of a length behind second finisher Awesome Gem, after running mid-pack under Joel Rosario. Awesome Gem (8-1) finished second by a length to upset winner Global Hunter (14-1). The winner was timed in 1:46.24.

Favored Monterey Jazz (1-1) got excited and ran himself out of the race early. He stalked Thorn Song into the first turn, but when Thorn Song bolted to the rail, Monterey Jazz took off and built a five-length lead before succumbing to a fifth-place finish for Tyler Baze.

Oct. 10, Grade II Oak Tree Mile, Santa Anita, One Mile (T). Whatsthescript wheeled out off the turn and didn't quicken toward home as neatly as needed. He finished well to take third, beaten 1 1/4 length.

Jeol Rosario, aboard Whatsthescript: “I think he ran very good, he went fast, but there was only one horse in the front. Nobody could have pressed that horse in the front. He could have gone wire to wire. If my horse and Monterrey Jazz could have put on a little more pressure, I could have had a good chance. We had a good pace, but there was only one horse in the front, and we couldn’t put any more pressure.”
