Derby Trail: Where They're Going Next
By Dick Downey
The Downey Profile
It feels like halftime in the 2011 Road to the Kentucky Derby. After last weekend, we culled numerous horses from our lists at The Downey Profile. Here are next-race plans--or lack of plans--for 65 horses still on our lists.
ALBERGATTI. Exciting newcomer's plans are being held close to the vest by Asmussen stable, but we will hear something very soon.
ALTERNATION. Rebel Stakes on March 19.
ANTHONY'S CROSS. The Santa Anita Derby on April 9 is said to be next.
ARCH TRAVELER. The Florida Derby on April 3 with the April 9 Wood Memorial a backup plan if defections don't crop up in the Florida Derby.
ARCHARCHARCH. Rebel Stakes on March 19.
ASTROLOGY. The Asmussen stable has been playing it close to the vest, but the San Felipe on March 12 looks likely.
AWESOME PATRIOT. The March 12 San Felipe or the March 19 Rebel.
BEAMER. Nominated to run back at Tampa in the March 12 Tampa Bay Derby.
BENCH POINTS. Stable has said they want the San Felipe on March 12; not "official" yet.
BIND. Allowance race at Keeneland?
BLUE LASER. After working at Ocala on Feb. 24, his name wasn't on the Tampa Bay Derby nominations list two days later. Pointing to the Vinery Spiral, where he is nominated?
BRETHREN. The March 12 Tampa Bay Derby.
CAL NATION. Nominated to the Tampa Bay Derby, but in late February connections said a one-mile allowance probably would be next--but didn't rule out a stakes race.
COMMA TO THE TOP. The San Felipe on March 12.
CRIMSON CHINA. Nominated to the Tampa Bay Derby on March 12 and also the March 26 Vinery Spirial.
CROSSBOW. Off the Derby Trail.
DA RULER. Will probably be kept short.
DECISIVE MOMENT. Said to be over soft tissue problem, the April 3 Florida Derby would probably suit better than the Louisiana Derby a week earlier.
DIALED IN. We keep waiting for somebody to find a race for him. If they don't do that soon, then the Florida Derby is next.
DREAMINOFTHEWIN. The Rebel on March 19.
ELITE ALEX. The Rebel on March 19.
FLASHPOINT. The Florida Derby on April 3 if he has come out of the Hutcheson win OK. If kept short, the Swale on the same day would be logical.
FREE ENTRY. Nominated to the March 12 Tampa Bay Derby and worked Feb. 27, the day after nominations closed. Last raced on Feb. 13.
GLINT. The Mountain Valley this Saturday at Oaklawn.
GOURMET DINNER. Either the Florida Derby or Santa Anita Derby a week later, stable said to be leaning to the latter.
J P'S GUSTO. The Rebel Stakes on March 19.
J W BLUE. Stable looking toward the Rebel but says he must step up.
JAKESAM. Like Positive Response, working up at Golden Gate after racing there on Feb. 12.
JAYCITO. The San Felipe on March 12.
MACHEN. The March 26 Louisiana Derby.
MAJESTIC HARBOR. We frankly don't know but he's stationed at Fair Grounds, broke his maiden there on Feb. 12 and worked there on Feb. 26.
MAJOR GAIN. No works since running up the track in the Jan. 30 Holy Bull.
MONZON. He's gone back North and the Gotham this Saturday was thought to be likely, but he wasn't entered. (Updated since original publication)
MR. COMMONS. Recent SA allowance winner has no next-start goal announced yet.
MUCHO MACHO MAN. Either the Louisiana Derby or Florida Derby, we think the latter.
NACHO BUSINESS. "He’ll be nominated to all the big races," trainer Breen recently said.
NACHO SAINT. The Gotham this Saturday is what "they" say.
PANTS ON FIRE. No word yet after up-the-track finish in the Risen Star.
PARENT'S HONOR. Back to work after upset loss in Jan. 29 allowance at OP. The Rebel?
PREACHINTOTHEDEVIL. The Gotham this Saturday.
POSITIVE RESPONSE. Last raced on Feb. 12; worked at GG Feb. 27. The San Felipe?
PRIME CUT. There's been no announcement, but we think he is not on the Derby Trail.
QUAIL HILL. “We’ll look at the Sunland Derby or the San Felipe,” trainer Hofmans said in mid-February.
RESCIND THE TRADE. The Gotham this Saturday.
RIVETING REASON. Still don't know about him but stable likes to run 'em so the San Felipe wouldn't be a surprise--but no works through March 1 since close loss in the Feb. 12 Lewis.
ROGUE ROMANCE. The March 26 Louisiana Derby is next.
RUNFLATOUT. Probable for the San Felipe on March 12.
SANTIVA. Next-race plans haven't been announced yet.
SILVER MEDALLION. No plans announced yet by Asmussen stable that has more than one in California. Will they try turf/synethic runner on dirt next?
SOLDAT. The Florida Derby on April 3.
SOVEREIGN DEFAULT. Worked on Feb. 22; waiting to see if he'll work again soon or if something is wrong.
SPLASH POINT. UAE 2000 Guineas winner not in the Al Bastakiya, and the UAE Derby on March 26 would be his next spot.
STAY THIRSTY. The Gotham this Saturday.
SWAY AWAY. The San Felipe is next, according to DRF.com. That would have him coming back 20 days after the San Vicente.
SWEET DUCKY. The April 3 Florida Derby.
THE FACTOR. The March 27 Sunland Derby until further notice.
THIRTYFIRSTSTREET. Robert B. Lewis runner hasn't worked since. Need to see a work.
TIZ BLESSED. Erratic workout pattern at PMM a concern and through March 1 has not been seen on the tab since Feb. 17.
TO HONOR AND SERVE. Will he stay South for the Florida Derby or go back to Aqueduct, where he's won twice, for the Wood a week later? For now, it's the Florida Derby.
TOBY'S CORNER. The Gotham this Saturday.
TRAVELIN MAN. No plans announced yet.
TURBULENT DESCENT. Next is the Anita Oaks on Saturday.
TWINSPIRED. John Battaglia Memorial on Saturday.
UNCLE MO. The Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 12 if it fills. If not, the Tampa Bay Derby the same day.
WILKINSON. The March 26 Louisiana Derby.
