Derby Trail: Where They're Going Next
By Dick Downey
The Downey Profile
While we're well down the road to the Kentucky Derby, we still have a few little races to run--most of them grade I's at a mile and an eighth. So where are the contenders going next? Here's a summary of 56 horses, most of them on our lists.
ALTERNATION (KY)--The Arkansas Derby on April 16 is possible after Alternation was schooled in the gate and didn't act up. He was a gate scratch in the Rebel Stakes.
ANIMAL KINGDOM (KY)--The Kentucky Derby on May 7 if dirt workouts at Churchill Downs please his connections. In the meantime, he'll train at Keeneland.
ANTHONY'S CROSS (PA)--The Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
ARCH TRAVELER (KY)--The Florida Derby this Sunday.
ARCHARCHARCH (KY)--The Arkansas Derby.
ASTROLOGY (KY)--He probably has enough earnings for the Kentucky Derby; but his Sunland Derby second was his only start this year. The next move is TBA. “We’ll try to be honest with ourselves and see how much (the Sunland Derby) took out of him,” trainer Steve Asmussen said early this week.
BENCH POINTS (CA)--The Santa Anita Derby.
BIND (KY)--Something other than any Triple Crown race.
BRETHREN (KY)--The Arkansas Derby.
CAL NATION (KY)--As of March 26, the Jerome was being examined as a possible springboard to the Preakness.
CALEB'S POSSE (KY)--The Arkansas Derby.
CELESTIC NIGHT (KY)--Possibly the Santa Anita Derby.
COMMA TO THE TOP (FL)--The Santa Anita Derby.
CRIMSON CHINA (KY)--A couple of days ago, Team Valor's Barry Irwin told DRF.com that in the Rushaway, Crimson China “bled a 2 on a scale of 5, so he’ll go to a hyperbaric chamber for four or five days. I’d imagine he’ll still be able to run in the Blue Grass.”
CRIMSON KNIGHT (KY)--This is posted before late nominations for the Triple Crown are released--Crimson Knight, a gelding, wasn't early-nominated--but reportedly connections will possibly run the Tampa Bay Derby runner-up on turf next.
DANCE CITY (KY)--Possibly the Illinois Derby.
DATA LINK (KY)--Toyota Blue Grass Stakes on April 16.
DECISIVE MOMENT (FL)--The Kentucky Derby.
DIALED IN (KY)--The Florida Derby this Sunday.
ELITE ALEX (ON)--He might try the Arkansas Derby next, but yesterday his trainer wouldn't commit. He might wait for another race and then head to the Belmont Stakes.
FLASHPOINT (FL)--His trainer, Rick Dutrow, has said he prefers the Swale. Supposing we'll know for sure whether it's the Swale or the Florida Derby when entries close on Thursday.
INDIAN WINTER (KY)--The Santa Anita Derby.
J P'S GUSTO (KY)--This could change, but so far it's the Arkansas Derby next after a poor run in the Rebel Stakes.
J W BLUE (KY)--The Arkansas Derby.
JAYCITO (KY)--The Wood Memorial still could be next, but Bob Baffert told Bloodhorse.com yesterday he might keep Jaycito at home for the Santa Anita Derby. “I know one thing.... He needs a mile and a quarter," Baffert said.
KING CONGIE (KY)--Maybe the Toyota Blue Grass or the Coolmore Lexington the following week; it's iffy at this point.
MASTER OF HOUNDS (KY)--Possibly the Kentucky Derby. Connections are said to be thinking it over seriously.
MR. COMMONS (KY)--The Santa Anita Derby.
MUCHO MACHO MAN (FL)--The Kentucky Derby.
NEHRO (KY)--Trainer Steve Asmussen said that Nehro would likely make his next start in the Arkansas Derby.
OFLEE WILD BOYS (CA)--The Santa Anita Derby.
PANTS ON FIRE (KY)--The Kentucky Derby.
POSITIVE RESPONSE (FL)--He's off the Derby Trail and is pointing to the May 14 Alcatraz Stakes on turf at Golden Gate Fields.
PRIME CUT (KY)--We don't know yet, but he looked all right winning an allowance over Bind last Saturday. He was given a 91 Beyer despite a winning time only 1/5 second off the track record.
PREMIER PEGASUS (KY)--The Santa Anita Derby.
RIVETING REASON (KY)--As of this post, he still hasn't put in a workout since March 5.
SANTIVA (KY)--The Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.
SILVER MEDALLION (KY)--The Santa Anita Derby.
SOLDAT (KY)--The Florida Derby this Sunday.
SOUR (KY)--Not determined. As of this post, he hadn't worked since March 19.
STAY THIRSTY (KY)--The Florida Derby this Sunday.
SWAY AWAY (KY)--Left at Oaklawn after his Rebel Stakes debacle, the Arkansas Derby is next until further notice.
SWEET DUCKY (KY)--Major bust running thirteenth in the UAE Derby might have him pointing to the Russian Derby now.
SWIFT WARRIOR (KY)--The Toyota Blue Grass.
THE FACTOR (KY)--The Arkansas Derby has been mentioned favorably by Bob Baffert, but Baffert has reserved the right to change direction.
TO HONOR AND SERVE (KY)--The Florida Derby this Sunday.
TOBY'S CORNER (KY)--Wood Memorial or Illinois Derby.
TRAVELIN MAN (KY)--Three works since the Hutcheson make him look likely for Sunday's Swale.
TRUMAN'S COMMANDER (KY)--The Arkansas Derby.
TWINSPIRED (KY)--Possibly the Coolmore Lexington on April 23.
UNCLE BRENT (KY)--The last we heard, Uncle Brent was considered a potential contender for the April 15 Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn, the day before the Arkansas Derby.
UNCLE MO (KY)--The Wood Memorial.
TWICE THE APPEAL (KY)--The Kentucky Derby.
WATCH ME GO (FL)--It won't be a synthetic-track race, and it could be the Illinois Derby.
WILKINSON (KY)--He may be pointed to the Belmont Stakes after running late but off the board in the Louisiana Derby.
WILLCOX INN (KY)--Toyota Blue Grass Stakes on April 16.
