Union Rags breezed a half-mile at Palm Meadows today and reportedly looked good doing it.
The move was timed by Gulfstream clockers in :48.60 (1/27).
"He did it real easy," said trainer Michael Matz. "We'll probably work him with another horse next week. He's doing very well. We're still planning on the Fountain of Youth as his first start. The main objective is to get him to the Derby in good shape."
Matz told Bloodhorse.com that Union Rags (Looking Good) has grown. "He’s filled out a little . . . he’s probably close to 17 hands," Matz said.
Meanwhile, Battle Hardened (Looking Good), who broke his maiden for trainer Eddie Kenneally at Tampa in Saturday's Grade III Sam F. Davis, was back at Palm Meadows. Kenneally said he is doing "very well." Battle Hardened just missed breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Dec. 31 when finishing second by a head to Big Screen.
"We think he's a nice horse with a future," Kenneally said. "We wanted to get some graded earnings, but we have a lot of confidence in him and it was a good place to take a shot."
Kenneally said he would nominate Battle Hardened for "all the appropriate races." He said the Grade I Florida Derby March 31 and the Grade II Tampa Bay Derby March 10 are both possibilities.
At Gulfstream Park, Ever So Lucky (Looking Good), second in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in only his second start last November, breezed five furlongs in 1:01.60 (4/8) for his 2012 debut Saturday in the Grade II Hutcheson Stakes.
Meanwhile, Bloodhorse.com reported that Discreet Dancer (Looking Good) missed a work at Palm Meadows today with an elevated temperature, casting some doubt over whether he'll be able to go forward in the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26.
