He'll be flown from California to Hot Springs, Ark. for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to get acclimated to the track at Oaklawn Park.
The goal: Winning the Grade III Southwest Stakes on Feb. 20.
Most recently third in the Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 7, Longview Drive (Worth Watching), a Kentucky-bred son of Pulpit, will be making his second start as a 3-year-old after winning two stakes last year on the Northern California fair circuit. The colt also shipped a distance of ground in November before finishing third in the Grade III Delta Jackpot.
“We are shipping tomorrow,” said Hollendorfer today. “He’s been training forwardly since his last race.”
Hollendorfer made visits to Oaklawn the last two seasons, with champion filly Blind Luck winning the Fantasy Stakes in 2010 and running second to Havre de Grace in the Azeri last year.
Longview Drive showed speed in the Sham, setting the pace with Secret Circle. Their speed duel set up eventual winner Out of Bounds with a perfect trip, but Longview Drive gamely fought back through the stretch along the rail and only missed by a length.
“I’m proud of the fact that he did hang in there and try to fight back through to the wire,” said Hollendorfer. “That was a good sign.”
The enthusiasm for racing in Arkansas was not lost on Hollendorfer in choosing this spot.
“I really like Oaklawn,” said Hollendorfer. “The fans there are unequalled in their enthusiasm, and I’m looking forward to showing my owners what it is like.”
