Four shippers from California arrived at Oaklawn Park today for the Grade III Southwest Stakes next Monday.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle (pictured at right) (Worth Watching); his Bob Baffert-trained stable mate Castaway; Longview Drive (Worth Watching) from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn, and Unbridled’s Note (Worth Watching) for trainer Steve Asmussen are expected to square off against a large contingent of local horses.
Assistant trainer Jim Barnes accompanied Secret Circle and Castaway for Baffert.
Secret Circle exits a runner-up finish as the favorite in the Grade III Sham Stakes in his 3-year-old debut. It was his first race since winning the inaugural Juvenile Sprint at Churchill Downs in November.
Castaway, a Kentucky-bred son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense owned by the powerful Irish-based Coolmore team, broke through with a maiden victory Jan. 21 at Santa Anita in his sixth career race, but only his second around two turns.
“I think we brought two very good horses,” said Barnes. Baffert trained Conveyance to win the Southwest in 2010 and won the Rebel Stakes the last two years with Lookin at Lucky and The Factor.
Longview Drive finished third in the Sham, a half-length behind Secret Circle and only a length behind winner Out of Bounds. He was a two-time stakes winner in Northern California last summer.
Unbridled’s Note has been training with Asmussen’s California string this winter after winning his debut race Breeders’ Cup week at Churchill Downs.
In other Southwest developments, Smarty Jones Stakes winner Junebugred (Worth Watching) worked a half-mile for trainer Steve Hobby Tuesday in a bullet :48.40 over a muddy track.
Pee H Dee (Just In Case) and Ring It Up (Just In Case), both trained by Chris Richard, went in company and fired bullet five-furlong drills in :59.00. Pee H Dee was third in the Springboard Mile in December and won an allowance race at Oaklawn on Jan. 16. Ring It Up finished second by a neck in a January allowance won by Atigun after setting the pace.
