Aikenite is fond of Churchill Downs, having won the Grade II Churchill Downs on Derby Day 2011; however, he finished eighth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in 2010. On a sloppy track, he was second in the one-mile Grade III Derby Trial in April, 2010.

One race prior to the Forego, Aikenite finished fifth to Jackson Bend in the James Marvin Stakes at Saratoga. Before that, he was fourth in the Met Mile, won by Tizway.

Sept. 3, Grade I Forego Stakes, Saratoga, Seven Furlongs. Aikenite came from ninth to take third place, beaten 3 1/4 lengths, and a head from the second spot. Jersey Town got the place, albeit not too close to Jackson Bend, after a stalking trip from fourth position.

Jackson Bend raced in seventh behind fractions of :22.09 and :44.45 set by Hamazing Destiny and favored Sidney’s Candy, who were heads apart in the early going. Corey Nakatani guided Jackson Bend between horses on the run into the stretch, and the colt closed stoutly to register a handy victory over Jersey Town and the late-closing Aikenite.

Jackson Bend completed the seven furlongs in 1:22.08.

Todd Pletcher: “We wanted him to settle and make one run, and that’s what he did. He closed well and he’s a very consistent, hard-trying horse every time."

Oct. 7, Grade III Phoenix Stakes, Keeneland, Six Furlongs. Aikenite lost to Hoofit by only a nose after coming five wide in the stretch. He just missed winning. The race was timed in 1:09.27.

On Oct. 23, Aikenite breezed four in :48.40 (8/35) at CD.

Before the Ancient Title, in 2011 Amazombie was busy. He had won the 6 1/2-furlong, Grade II Potrero Grande Stakes at Santa Anita, the six-furlong Sunshine Millions Sprint at Santa Anita and the 7 1/2-furlong Tiznow Stakes at Hollywood Park. He placed in the 6 1/2 furlong Sensational Star Handicap on Santa Anita's downhill course. He was third in the seven-furlong, Grade I Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park, the six-furlong, Grade I Bing Crosby at Del Mar and the six-furlong, Grade III Los Angeles Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Oct. 8, Grade I Ancient Title Stakes, Santa Anita, Six Furlongs. At the end of the Grade I Ancient Title Stakes at Santa Anita, Amazombie, at 3-1, was in front--not 2-5 favorite The Factor. In fact, The Factor ran off the board fourth, prompting inverted show payoffs, albeit not very inflated ones due to the small field size.

As expected, The Factor went for the lead in the Ancient Title, but he was joined there by 45-1 longshot Sirocco Strike. The pair went through blazing fractions of :21.27 and :43.80. Then they both faltered while Amazombie romped home. He was fifth of six in the early going. The race was timed in 1:08.24.

After Amazombie came Irrefutable, Mensa Heat, The Factor, Sirocco Strike and Square Eddie.

The win race Amazombie's record to 22 Starts: 9 - 4 - 5, earnings of $715,708.

Bill Spawr: “He went wide, he circled ‘em wide, he said he had so much horse he didn’t want to get stopped. That’s why he went wide. He didn’t surprise me; he loves this dirt. He loves dirt.”

Asked about going on to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint: “We’ll see how he comes out. We hope to, if he comes out fine. If he doesn’t, he’ll run in the Cal Cup. We have a month.

“I was happy with the early splits, especially (Sirocco Strike) hooking The Factor. He’s a really good horse. We’ll point to the Breeders’ Cup because it’s dirt, and I think with a lot of speed, it will help his chances, so we’ll see. We just hope he comes out good.”

Mike Smith: “He just oozes class. You have to really give a lot of credit to Bill (Spawr) and his crew. He’s a big strong horse and Bill just keeps him happy, sound, and fit. He just runs dynamite and never runs a bad one. Today was one of his very good ones, and being back on dirt helps a real lot. He deserves his chance now in the Breeders’ Cup. He’s got great tactical speed, a great turn of foot, and a race at Churchill Downs could really set up well for him. We’ll see what happens.”

In 2011, Apriority finished second in the six-furlong Sunshine Millions Sprint at Santa Anita, the seven-furlong, Grade I Carter Handicap at Aqueduct, the seven-furlong and the Grade II Churchill Downs Stakes. He won an allowance race at Gulfstream Park between the Sunshine Millions and the Carter.

Aug. 7, Grade I A. G. Vanderbilt, Saratoga, Six Furlongs. Apriority closely stalked the early pace three wide and was outfinished to come fourth, beaten five lengths, after fading in the stretch. Sean Avery won the race timed in 1:09.71. Early fractions were :21.91 and :44.56.

Oct. 1, Grade I Vosburgh Stakes, Belmont Park, Six Furlongs. Apriority finished seventh, beaten 10 lengths by Giant Ryan. The race track was sloppy, and Giant Ryan made the lead and held it in a merry-go-round race. Apriority was bumped early and bobbled, costing him early position.

Fawkes drove his two-horse trailer from Florida to New York on Oct. 4 to pick up Big Drama and Apriority. “At this point, I’m still planning to run both horses in the Breeders’ Cup,” said Fawkes.

Oct. 23 NOTE on the Oct. 22 work in company with Big Drama: “Apriority had to go a little wide and...both (Apriority and Big Drama) had to avoid a pair working in front of them coming down the stretch, but they worked excellent. Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup are taken on Monday, and we’ll make a decision about Apriority then.”--David Fawkes

Age: 5

Winner of the BC Sprint at Churchill Downs in 2010.

Jan. 15, Grade III Mr. Prospector Stakes, Gulfstream Park, Six Furlongs. Big Drama won by four lengths and set a track record with his time of 1:08.12. Big Drama was given a 120 Beyer Speed Figure, a number that had not been surpassed in any race this year as of a Sept. 28 edit of this profile. After the race, trainer Fawkes said the horse would get some time off, and he meant it.

August 23 NOTE: Trainer Fawkes has consistently said nothing was wrong with his horse.

Sept. 4, Whippleton Stakes, Calder, 6 1/2 Furlongs. Big Drama returned from a layoff of more than 6 1/2 months with a very impressive 2 1/4-length victory.

Daniel Centeno rode--former rider Eibar Coa is still recovering from serious injuries. Big Drama broke from the one-post in the field of just four after three scratches. He sat second behind a first quarter in :22 flat and took command easily into the far turn, holding a safe margin over second-choice Black Cat Diamond to the wire in 1:17.62. During the process, he lost his left front shoe.

The 5-year-old Florida homebred by Montbrook ran his career record to 18-11-4-21 and earnings of nearly $2.75 million.

David Fawkes (by phone from Saratoga): “I was relieved when they got the race to go and we didn’t have to ship (to Monmouth Park for Icecapade Stakes), but I’m even more relieved now, and he did it without a shoe. We think he might have lost it leaving the gate. The fractions were legitimate. Danny and Eibar are friends, and Eibar told him to ride him with confidence, and he did. After he made the lead, he just coasted home. It was all very smooth. He’ll stay down there and train and then be flown (to New York) the week of the Vosburgh.”

Daniel Centeno: “I never rode this horse before, but I had the opportunity to breeze him, and between that and today I can tell you what a great feeling it is to ride this him. I think he was very fit today, but he needed this race to get him over the top. I appreciate and feel very fortunate to have been given the chance to ride such a special and talented racehorse, and I can only hope that I would be considered to ride him in the future.”

Sept. 28 NOTE: Trainer Fawkes says, “If (the Whippleton effort) was too good, it might have me worried, but off a layoff and the level of fitness I had him, I thought it was a perfect race. Calder was nice enough to write that race for him. He only worked five-eighths one time. He had galloped probably 30 or 40 days at the farm before he came in. So he was fit.”

Sept. 30 NOTE: Big Drama was to miss his key prep, the Vosgburgh, in which he was listed as the 2-1 second choice. His trainer said he came down with a fever on this date. According to Fawkes, Big Drama will now likely be trained up to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Oct. 6 NOTE: DRF.com reports that trainer Fawkes said Big Drama has fully recovered from the 103-degree temperature that kept him out of the Vosburgh. Fawkes drove his two-horse trailer from Florida to New York on Tuesday to pick up Big Drama and stablemate Apriority. “At this point, I’m still planning to run both horses in the Breeders’ Cup,” said Fawkes, who added that Big Drama's next workout will come Oct. 9 or 10.

Oct. 16 NOTE: “That was excellent,” said trainer Fawkes after the Oct. 15 breeze. “He did everything right. I wanted to work between races to keep him interested. He’ll work here again next Saturday and then one more time, probably the next Saturday (Oct. 29). I don’t need to work him at Churchill. We didn’t last year. I don’t want to change anything, so we’ll probably van him up there that Sunday or Monday (Oct. 30-31).

Oct. 23 NOTE on the Oct. 22 work in company with Apriority: “Apriority had to go a little wide and...both (Apriority and Big Drama) had to avoid a pair working in front of them coming down the stretch, but they worked excellent. Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup are taken on Monday, and we’ll make a decision about Apriority then.”--David Fawkes

His camp always wants him on a fast track, not an off track.

Euroears rose to a new level after being transferred to the care of trainer Baffert. In his first three starts after that happened, Euroears won the Grade II Palo Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita, finished second to the brilliant Singapore star Rocket Man in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, and whipped top West Coast sprinters Smiling Tiger and Amazombie in the Grade I Bing Crosby.

July 31, Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes, Del Mar, Six Furlongs. Euroears' final time of 1:08.15 set a track record, eclipsing the 1:08.29 set by Cost of Freedom in August, 2008. In front-running fashion at 2.40-1 odds, he defeated even-money favorite Smiling Tiger by 1 1/4 length. Smiling Tiger closed from several lengths back. Amazombie was third, beaten 1 3/4 length. Six ran.

Rafael Bejarano: “He’s an amazing horse. He has lots of heart on the lead. He wants to be in front, and he’s a different horse when he is. I thought I would have some pressure up front, but there was none. When we turned for home, I asked him a little, and he really went. He’s an amazing horse.”

Mike Marlow, assistant to Bob Baffert: “That’s his style, and he ran a huge race today. Coming back from Dubai (second in the March 6 Golden Shaheen) he had had time to recover, and he runs well fresh. This track today wasn’t favoring that kind of performance. But it didn’t look like he was extended that much even at the wire.  I didn’t give (Rafael) any instructions; he had talked to Bob earlier.”

“I would think there would be a good chance (for the Pat O'Brien next), but I don’t know. That’s for Bob to decide.”

Sept. 26 NOTE: Asked if The Factor was as fast a horse as he’s ever trained, trainer Baffert said, “I think Euroears is pretty damn fast himself. It’s hard to separate those two going six.”

Sept. 28 NOTE: “He’s a very fast horse, and we’re just hoping for a fast track (in the Ancient Title),” trainer Baffert said.

Oct. 1, Grade I Vosburgh Stakes, Belmont Park, Six Furlongs. On a sloppy track favoring front speed, 12-1 Giant Ryan went to the lead from the gate while Euroears, his main speed competition, was shut off out of the gate. That was the race, and Giant Ryan won by a non-challenging half-length over 7-1 Force Freeze. The final time was 1:09.10. Giant Ryan got the first couple of splits in :22.10 and :44.36. Euroears finished last, beaten 16 lengths.

Despite the speed bias, Caixa Electronica passed tired horses to get third, beaten two lengths. Favored Trappe Shot was fourth after breaking slowly and being bumped after the start. He raced three wide on the turn and was outfinished.

Oct. 2 NOTE: "Euroears missed the break a little bit, and then they just came over on him immediately. If he would have broke and been out there, he would have been gone," trainer Baffert said.

Force Freeze raced in Dubai from October 2009 to March 2011. Returned to the U. S., he won the Teddy Drone at Monmouth by four lengths in July. He was timed in a quick 1:07.77. Next stop: New York.

Oct. 1, Grade I Vosburgh Stakes, Belmont Park, Six Furlongs. Force Freeze and Paco Lopez were second all the way but could not gain ground on the front-running winner. On a sloppy track favoring front speed, 12-1 Giant Ryan went to the lead from the gate while Euroears, his main speed competition, was shut off out of the gate. That was the race, and Giant Ryan won by a non-challenged half-length over 7-1 Force Freeze. The final time was 1:09.10. Giant Ryan got the first couple of splits in :22.10 and :44.36.

Despite the speed bias, Caixa Electronica passed tired horses to get third, beaten two lengths. Favored Trappe Shot was fourth after breaking slowly and being bumped after the start. He raced three wide on the turn and was outfinished.

That put the record of Force Freeze at 20 starts, seven wins with only one of them blacktype, three seconds, three thirds and earnings of $493,719.

Peter Walder: “He ran a monstrous race. Paco said if he liked the track a little bit, he thinks he would have caught him. Other than winning, I couldn’t be happier. I just can’t win a race here. The last three horses that I ran finished second. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be (in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint). He deserves a chance. This was the toughest field he had all year. He proved he belonged here.”

The Breeders’ Cup Sprint will cost a $100,000 supplemental fee.“He made his own money,” said trainer Parboo. “He won the Grade II Smile, $350,000. He won the Grade I (Vosburgh). I don’t have to pay from my pocket.”

Giant Ryan raced only once in 2010, his first start since a last-place finish in the Grade III Gotham in 2009. After that Feb. 18, 2010 outing, he missed another 11 months of racing. “It was a type of (foot) fungus that everything we tried, it would get better for two or three months and then it would come back. He would breeze 59, 58, and the next day he would be lame.”

Recent activity:

July 9, Grade II Smile Sprint, Calder, Six Furlongs. It is notable that Indiano won the Carry Back Stakes in a time that was several lengths better than that of Giant Ryan, who won the Smile Sprint the same day. Giant Ryan went the distance in 1:11.34, while Indiano was timed in 1:10.60.

Despite the speed bias, Caixa Electronica passed tired horses to get third, beaten two lengths. Favored Trappe Shot was fourth after breaking slowly and being bumped after the start. He raced three wide on the turn and was outfinished.

Bisnath Parboo: “He not only was two-for-two on the wet track, he is two-for-two in 2011 at Belmont, two-for-two at Calder. He was already qualified for the Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ with the Smile. This is the eighth race for the year. He needed a break after the Smile.”

Shivananda Parbhoo, winning owner: “If he couldn’t lead, he’d sit second. This is his home track. He loves Belmont Park. I will keep him here for a week or two and then he will ship directly to Churchill Downs. He will leave three weeks before the Breeders’ Cup. This was to see if he could compete with the best horses.”

Cornelio Velasquez: “My horse likes the sloppy track. He broke fast and wanted to go to the lead. I had a lot of horse at the top of the stretch. It’s been a long time since he ran, but he tries hard every time. I’ve had a lot of luck with him (five wins in five starts).”

Oct. 2 NOTE: “Very, very, very good,” trainer Parbhoo said. “He came out really happy, really good. He ate up all his feed last night. He walked pretty strong this morning. We had to put the lip chain on him. He didn’t want to stay still. He didn’t come back tired. He came back and drank a half a bucket of water and that was it.

“I don’t think I’m concerned about anybody right now. I was a little concerned going into (the Vosburgh). There were so many strong horses in there. I didn’t know what bracket to put him in, whether he was a grade I horse. I wasn’t surprised, but winning the race was unbelievable.”

On Oct. 19, Giant Ryan breezed three on a wet-fast track in :39.20 (2/4) at CD.
On Oct. 26, Giant Ryan breezed four in :48.60 (7/25) at CD.

Second as a longshot in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

July 22, James Marvin Stakes, Saratoga, Seven Furlongs. Jackson Bend pulled an upset victory at 8-1. Hamazing Destiny and Robby Albarado were next at 6-1, and 33-1 Escrow Kid was third. Favored Aikenite was fifth at 5-2, behind 3-1 Here Comes Ben.

Hamazing Destiney and Jackson Bend tracked Escrow Kid through opening fractions of :22.49 and :44.57, then Jackson Bend charged through an opening on the rail in the stretch to outkick Hamazing Destiny to the wire for a 2 1/2-length victory. Escrow Kid was another 1/2 length back. Jackson Bend ran in a swift 1:20.91.

Hamazing Destiny was still searching for a breakthrough victory, having finished second in his two most recent starts, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in November and the James Marvin. Hamazing Destiny had yet to win a stakes race.

Aug. 4 NOTE: “The comeback effort was really strong, to have that long layoff and go seven-eighths,” said trainer Lukas. "The only concern now is whether it was too strong. I hope he rebounds from that to run back in the Vanderbilt. I think he is better at six furlongs, but when they run that strong and that well, you’re always a little concerned about the ‘bounce theory,’ as they call it.”

Aug. 7, Grade I A. G. Vanderbilt, Saratoga, Six Furlongs. Hamazing Destiny was three or four wide in fifth or sixth postition, and he finished sixth, beaten eight lengths by Sean Avery.

Sept. 3, Grade I Forego Stakes, Saratoga, Six Furlongs. Hamazing Destiny finished fourth, beaten 4 1/4 lengths by Jackson Bend and Uncle Mo, after setting a contested pace of :22.09 and :44.45 under Robby Albarado. The top two finishers were three lengths clear of Jersey Town.

NOTE: Hamazing Destiny's record now stood at 19 starts with four wins, four seconds and two thirds with earnings of  $502,959.

Oct. 7, Grade III Stoll Keenon Phoenix Stakes, Six Furlongs. Hoofit, a 15-1 morning line, upset a short field to win at 11-1 by a nose over Aikenite. Hamazing Destiny was a willing third after also coming from off the pace. Shuffled back and six wide in the earlier going, he was beaten 1 3/4 length in a deceptively good effort.

Both the top finishers also came from off the pace. Aikenite, the bettors' second choice at 2-1, closed outside in the stretch to contest the late lead, which was held by Hoofit after he came through on the rail, from third-to-last in the turn, under Edgar Prado.

The early pace was contested by favored Flashpoint and Sterling Outlook after some early main-track contests indicated an early speed rail bias, much like the Keeneland of old before Polytrack was installed. Sure Enough, both the pacesetters wilted after initial fractions of 22.10 and :45.15. Flashpoint finished fourth, Sterling Outlook seventh and last. Hoofit took advantage of the rail bias, or at least that's what John Velazquez, aboard Aikenite, said.

Robby Albarado, aboard Hamazing Destiny: “I was really happy with him. I got squeezed a little in the turn, but there were two very nice horses in front of me. He’s not a big Polytrack horse anyway, but this sets him up nice for Churchill.”

Jackson Bend is a late-running miler that's won over a million dollars, $273,500 of it this year. He is on the small side with a big heart and love of the game. In seven 2011 starts, he's won twice, placed twice and has finished third once.

His best outing came going seven furlongs in the Grade I Forego at Saratoga on Sept. 3. He won and was timed in 1:22.08. Jersey Town was 3 1/4 lengths back in third.

Trainer Zito has said on multiple occasions that Jackson Bend is more suited to the Dirt Mile because of his size--saying that the Sprint affords less room for error if there is traffic trouble. However, pre-entries indicate the Dirt Mile will probably have a larger field than the Sprint.

On Oct. 18, Jackson Bend breezed four on the training track in :47.80 (5/70) at SAR.
On Oct. 27, Jackson Bend breezed four on a good training track in :47.40 (1/3) at SAR.
