Aug. 19, Green Flash Handicap, Del Mar, Five Furlongs (T). After a long layoff, California Flag led at all calls to win by a neck. He was the even-money favorite off a 2-1 morning line. Joe Talamo guided him to fractions of :21.74, :43.71 and the winning time of :55.22. Talamo: “Oh, it’s fun to ride one like him. He’s so much fun. I’m so proud of him right now. He had to run hard all the way. Martin’s horse (Bamaha Breeze) came right up on me and wouldn’t let loose. But my horse was running easy. Before, when a horse would lay up on him, he’d just want to cut loose. But he’s better now. And he took off down the lane. He wasn’t going to let them get him. I think he’s better now than he’s ever been. He’s really going good.” A frustrated Joel Rosario, who rode runner-up Delta Storm, said, “My horse ran good. But the winner…… What are you going to do with one like that?” Trainer Koriner: “He’s been working spectacularly, but that doesn’t translate to racing. It’s always up in the air what they’re going to do until they race. He’s a very fast horse on the grass, probably the fastest I’ve ever had. I’d like another chance in the Breeders’ Cup, but we won’t know until later. We’ll see how he comes out of the race and then look ahead. I think we’ll go again in the Morvich and then maybe in the Breeders’ Cup.” Sept. 30, Grade III Morvich Stakes, Santa Anita, 6 1/2 Furlongs (T). In only his second start since last November, California Flag won this race for the second year in a row on the opening day of Santa Anita's 2009 Oak Tree meeting. The 5-year-old gray gelding earned an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. With Joe Talamo aboard, California Flag (8-5) maintained his usual front-running style in the Morvich, covering the distance in a course record 1:11.40 to win by a length. Get Funky (10-1) finished second, followed 1 1/4 length by Bruce's Dream (6-1) and two lengths by Tiz West (11-1). Tenga Cat, Stoneside and Desert Code were next in line in the field of 10. "He's by far the fastest horse I've ever ridden,'' said Talamo. "He's so much more relaxed this year. I love the way he comes up to the Breeders' Cup this year. This was only his second start since last November, and he's a much better horse than he was last year.'' "He was really nice and relaxed today,'' trainer Koriner said. "Hopefully, the Breeders' Cup will be a little slower than it was last year. He's doing way better this year. He's really fresher, so I think he'll do the job.'' CANNONBALL (NY) Trainer: Wesley Ward Owner: Kenneth Ramsey & Sarah Ramsey Breeder: Kenneth Ramsey & Sarah Ramsey Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Catienus (Storm Cat, Diamond City) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): No Deadline (Skywalker, Coax Classic) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 7-2-5-0-0 (14) 4.60 Age: 4 Cannonball has shown versatility in the distance of his races and can make a late winning move. Sept. 5, Commentator Stakes, Saratoga, 5 1/2 Furlongs (T). Cannonball was favored at 6-5 and won by a neck after surging in the stretch. Silver Timber (8-5) was outrun to the wire by Cannonball but prevailed over Ahvee's Destiny by a half-length. Six ran. The winning time was a fast 1:00.84. DELTA STORM (KY) Trainer: Mike Mitchell Owner: Michael House Breeder: Alex G. Delta Storm then took a racing break while continuing to train at Hollywood Park. After the Green Flash, this old warrior had run 30 times with 11 wins, seven seconds and two thirds. From 14 turf starts, he had six wins. His best finish in a graded stake had been third in the Grade III Hollywood Turf Express Handicap in 2008. Oct. 4 NOTE: “With Delta Storm, it was either running down the hill on turf against California Flag (in the Morvich) or going in the Ancient Title, and I think six furlongs is my horse’s better distance," trainer Mitchell said. Oct. 11, Grade I Ancient Title Stakes, Santa Anita, Six Furlongs. Delta Storm finished third to Gayego and Crown of Thorns, beaten 1 3/4 lengths. He closed from seventh to get there, while Gayego closed from ninth in the 10-horse field. Gayego, the 6-5 favorite, was timed in 1:08.28. DESERT CODE (KY) Trainer: David Hofmans Owner: TYB Stable Breeder: ClassicStar Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): E Dubai (Mr. Prospector, Words of War) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Chatta Code (Lost Code, Chattahoochee) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 8-4-8-0-0 (20) 4.00 Age: 5 Following his win of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Desert Code won Santa Anita’s Grade III Daytona Handicap over the same course. After a loss in the San Simeon over the downhill course on April 18, Hofmans turned Desert Code out with an eye on a defense of his title. “He just needed a rest,” Hofmans said. “We wanted to have a fresh horse for this year’s Breeders’ Cup.” Entering the Morvich, Desert Code had earnings of $1,088,939 from seven victories in 22 lifetime starts. Sept. 30, Grade III Morvich Stakes, Santa Anita, 6 1/2 Furlongs (T). Desert Code finished seventh after a 5 1/2-month layoff. California Flag won this race for the second year in a row on the opening day of Santa Anita's 2009 Oak Tree meeting. Desert Code came in 5 for 8 on this turf course, but was sixth most of the way under Richard Migliore. "He made a little run, then he kind of leveled off,'' Migliore said. "No amount of work can do what a race can do. I really think the race will make him come on. I think he will be up to the challenge of trying to defend his title in the Breeders' Cup.'' There were no notes team quotes from trainer Hofmans. DIAMONDRELLA (GB) Trainer: Angel Penna, Jr. Owner: IEAH Stables Breeder: W. S. Farish Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Rock of Gibraltar (IRE), (Danehill, Offshore Boom (IRE)) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Tap Your Feet (Dixieland Band, Exotic Moves) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 5-3-10-0-0 (18) 2.60 Age: 5 Diamondrella had several options going into Breeders' Cup, including the Filly & Mare Turf, a race for which she has an automatic entry with her win of the First Lady--but this isn't her most likely spot, in all probability. She could be sent to the Filly & Mare Sprint or face boys in the Mile on turf. One race connections said early this Fall they did not want to point toward is the Breeders’ Cup Mile, where Diamondrella would have to face not only top males but Goldlikova, perhaps the best turf filly in the world. But things change. Earlier in the year, Diamondrella won the 5 1/2-furlong Giant's Causeway Stakes at Keeneland and the one-mile, one-turn Grade I Just a Game Stakes on Belmont Stakes day. Most recently, she finished sixth, beaten 6 3/4 lengths by Informed Decision, in the Grade III Masters at Presque Isle Downs for then-trainer Angel Penna, Jr. Oct. 10, Grade I First Lady Stakes, Keeneland, One Mile (T). Diamondrella finished strongly to defeat Tizaqueena and favored Forever Together. Rajiv Maragh rode the winner. Forever Together, the even-money favorite, who trailed the field behind very moderate fractions going down the backstretch, made her run too late and finished third. Diamondrella, the second choice in the betting, paid $7.20 to win at 5-2 odds. Tizaqueena was 11-1. The race was timed in 1:38.66 on soft turf. Hotlantic held a wide lead going into the second turn after opening fractions of :24.35 and :48.13, but Tizaqueena began closing ground leaving it. As Tizaqueena was going to the front, Diamondrella was furiously closing ground while Forever Together finally got into gear. Tizaqueena couldn't hold off Diamondrella, who won by three-quarter length. Forever Together, who did a lot but much too late, was the same distance back in third. Going into the race, the question was whether Diamondrella could pursue her closing style going two turns. Previously, she'd won that way, but only going one turn. It now appears she has the versatility to do it both ways. Rajiv Maragh rider of winner Diamondrella: “I wasn’t really that worried about the horses in front of me, because my main competition was right next to me and behind me. I was paying more attention to them and trying to time my move perfectly, trying to wait for the right time, and it just worked out really well. She gave me a big turn of foot like she always does—very consistent. I know what I’ve got with her because she always gives it to me. "I gotta keep track of (Forever Together) because she’s a very talented filly, the champion last year. A lot of credit to my filly. She does the work for me. She’s beaten Forever Together twice now, so that’s impressive.” Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables: “We bought her two weeks ago. We knew she liked the track here; the question was two turns. It worked out really well. We’re really happy. (The purchase decision) was a combination of me and (bloodstock agent) Nick Sallusto. Nick really deserves a lot of credit for the work he’s done for us. He continues to bring us good horses. We continue to buy them, and they continue to run for us. We’re really excited.” EL GATO MALO (KY) Trainer: Craig Dollase Owner: West Point Throughbreds Breeder: Kenneth C. Roberts Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): El Corredor (Mr. Greeley, Silvery Swan) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): One Bad Cat (Mountain Cat) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 5-0-3-0-0 (8) 4.33 Age: 4 According to a Bloodhorse.com report on Sept. 16, "West Point is...looking at the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with El Gato Malo, who came off a five-month layoff to win a 1 1/16-mile allowance race in a sharp 1:40 2/5 at Del Mar Sept. 9. “El Gato Malo is in the mix, too, now,” West Point's Terry Finley said. “You can’t forget about him. We’re trying to figure out where to go next, but he holds the track record at Santa Anita going a mile, so we’ll look at the Breeders’ Cup (Dirt) Mile with him.” Oct. 9, Allowance, Santa Anita, One Mile. El Gato Malo's connections probably hoped this race wouldn't come up as tough as it did, but this was almost a stakes-quality field. El Gato Malo finished fourth, beaten 3 3/4 lengths by Neko Bay, at 3-1 odds. Mast Track finished second as the 8-5 favorite, defeated a length by Neko Bay, who has all the same connections as Zenyatta and who was timed in 1:35.28. With Mike Smith in the saddle, Neko Bay returned from a 10-month layoff to find an opening near the rail and run down Mast Track. Mast Track, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, finished 2 1/4 lengths ahead of millionaire Becrux and five-time British jockey champion Kieren Fallon in a stellar field for the level. GET FUNKY (FL) Trainer: John Sadler Owner: Keith Abrahams Breeder: Larry Stewart Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Straight Man (Saint Ballado (CAN), Brilliant Melody) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Miss Popularity (Storm Bird (CAN), Popularity (IRE)) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 5-2-9-2-0 (18) 1.77 Age: 6 In 2008, Get Funky checked in ninth of 14 in the Turf Sprint. Sept. 30, Grade III Morvich Stakes, Santa Anita, 6 1/2 Furlongs (T). Get Funky finished second at longish odds after stalking a fast pace in fourth. California Flag won this race for the second year in a row on the opening day of Santa Anita's 2009 Oak Tree meeting. Trainer Sadler said Get Funky would be pointed toward the BC Turf Sprint. GOTTA HAVE HER (KY) Trainer: Jenine Sahadi Owner: Green Lantern Stables LLC Breeder: Nursery Place & Robert T. Manfuso Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Royal Academy (Nijinsky (CAN), Crimson Saint) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Winnowing (Rahy, Lady Sharp) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 8-0-10-4-0 (22) 1.44 Age: 5 In her last nine starts, Gotta Have Her has never been more than 1 3/4 length away at the wire while posting four wins, four seconds and a third. Two of those victories were achieved over Santa Anita’s unique downhill turf layout last Spring. Aug. 16, Grade I John C. Mabee Stakes, Del Mar, 1 1/8 Mile (T). Gotta Have Her may have been moved a tad too soon by Tyler Baze. Magical Fantasy (2-1) put it a nice come-from-behind performance. Next-to-last on the turn for home, Alex Solis guided Magical Fantasy between horses, and she unleashed a devastating burst of speed which propelled her to a one-length triumph. Gotta Have Her (7-1), with Tyler Baze up, was a bang-up second after running down front-runner Patricia's Gem between horses, only to be passed up by the winner. She was followed by Patricia's Gem (4-1), who held on gamely for third another half-length back after setting the pace into the stretch under Victor Espinoza. Fourth in the field of nine was Visit (5-1). Magical Fantasy ran her final furlong in 11 seconds flat to secure the triumph with a time of 1:47.17 over the inner Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Tyler Baze: “She’s a good, good filly and she ran a great race today. We just got beat by a good one. That’s all.” Sept. 9, Grade II Palomar Stakes, Del Mar, 1 1/16 Mile (T). Gotta Have Her took this one at 3-1 odds, and she got up just in time after tepid fractions, by a neck over Lethal Heat (6-1). Caribbean Sunset (1-1) finished third in the field of eight. The winner came home in 1:40.67. Jenine Sahadi, trainer of Gotta Have Her: “I think she’s fabulous. I just adore her. She gives 110 percent every time she runs. I usually don’t run horses back quite so soon, but it was either this race or go two months to the next one. I had some anxiety about coming back so soon, but I guess it turned out OK. It’s been quite a project to get her to relax and settle out there, but it was great to see her settle behind that slow pace today.” Tyler Baze, on board Gotta Have Her: “She’s just a joy to ride. Jenine has done a wonderful job with her, and she knows what she’s doing. She knows just what she’s doing. Jenine says she gives 110%. I think it might be 120%. Or maybe 150%. You’ve got to love a horse like her.” Oct. 17, Sen. Ken Maddy Handicap, Santa Anita, 6 1/2 Furlongs (T). Gotta Have Her, unbeaten in three previous competitions over Santa Anita’s downhill turf course, burst through an opening along the rail to extend her perfect showing to four in the race for fillies and mares as the 3-2 favorite. With Tyler Baze at the controls, the 5-year-old mare overtook longshot pacesetter Pasar Silbano in upper stretch to score by two lengths while traversing the distance in 1:12.09. Tuscan Evening, the 7-2 third choice, finished third another 1 1/2 length back in the field of nine. Gotta Have Her, who was cutting back in distance, tracked in fifth place during the early running of the Maddy as David Flores sent Pasar Silbano to a three-length advantage. Baze found clear sailing along the fence to negotiate his winning move while the early leader stubbornly held the place. Queen Ofthe Catsle, the defending champion, was never a factor. Sent off as the second choice at odds of 7-2, Queen Ofthe Catsle checked in eighth. Saturday’s triumph was the eighth in 23 starts for the bay mare. Her record includes six seconds and three thirds. The Maddy’s winning purse of $60,000 elevated her earnings to $690,600. Tyler Baze, winning rider: “She’s never been beaten down the hill, and I don’t think any horse can beat her here. The owners and Jenine have just been so nice to me, they let me ride her the last two times with a broken finger, and she’s just a dream to ride. She’s so consistent. Today, I wasn’t worried about the temporary rail or if I could get through inside, because I had two options, I could’ve gone inside or outside. We discussed it this morning and (the Turf Sprint is) the plan right now.” Jenine Sahadi, winning trainer: “She's fabulous. I’m so proud of her. Horses like her come along once in a lifetime for me. I know I can always count on her. To be able to say that is huge. "We’re going to keep her in training. We’ll take it one day at a time. We are considering the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. She’s always had tons of raw talent. She’s just been a bit of a project, trying to get her to settle down. If you look back at her form a year and a half ago, she was on the lead, pulling, going very, very quickly. She’s been a little bit of a slow learner. Like I said, it’s been a lot of work. A lot of people have helped me with her in the mornings. I obviously am not an exercise rider or a work rider. "Tyler rides her beautifully. The ride today was one of the most magnificent he’s ever given her. She’s just a delight, what can I tell you? I wish I could give her a big hug and a kiss, but she’s anti-social, so I can’t get near her, except when she’s got a lip chain on.” NOBLE COURT (KY) Trainer: John Sadler Owner: Joy Ride Racing Breeder: Brereton C. Jones Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Doneraile Court (Seattle Slew, Sophisticated Girl) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Grey Dawn Grey (Grindstone, Magnificent Dawn) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 8-7-8-1-0 (24) 3.80 Age: 5 Sept. 6, Grade I Pat O'Brien Stakes, Del Mar, Seven Furlongs. He was no match for Zensational, but Noble Court stayed well off the early pace set by that one, then closed to easily be second-best by 2 1/2 lengths. Zensational wasn't asked much and won in 1:22.31 after setting fractions of :23.10, :45.37 and 1:09.66. Joel Rosario, aboard Noble Court: “A good race for him. That’s how he runs, coming from the back. He closed, but the other horse, he’s just too fast.” SILVER TIMBER (NY) Trainer: Chad Brown Owner: Michael Dubb Breeder: Sez Who Thoroughbreds Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Prime Timber (Sultry Song, Wine Taster) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): River Princess (Alwuhush, Spanish Play (CAN)) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: Age: 6 Trainer Brown claimed Silver Timber for $25,000 at Gulfstream Park in April. Silver Timber is not Breeders' Cup-nominated and would have to be supplemented to the Turf Sprint. July 18, Grade III Jaipur Stakes, Belmont Park, Six Furlongs (T). Silver Timber, a successful claim, pulled clear of favored Heros Reward in the stretch and went on to a 1 1/2-length victory. Ridden by Eibar Coa, the 6-year-old dueled saddlecloth-to-saddlecloth through fractions of :21.71 and :44.53 with the even-money choice Heros Reward, then edged away to hit the wire in 1:07.60 to earn his first stakes victory. Trainer Chad Brown: “I was little worried early that there were going too fast, but at the top of the stretch I thought we had a little more horse. Mr. Dubb had always liked this horse, and he told me to go take a peek at him when he was in at Gulfstream. He fit into our program really well. I don’t know where he will go next, but I am sure there’s something at Saratoga for him.” Jockey Eibar Coa: “He was surprisingly sharp today. I never thought he was going to be that sharp from the gate. He always breaks good, but he’s never shown me that kind of speed, and it actually helped me out big time in the race because the speed didn’t show up, and when Javier took the lead with the favorite, I was forced to just follow him close. In the stretch I didn’t know exactly how much horse I had. I was hoping that he just kept running and that the favorite just gave up and allowed me to open up a little bit, and that was enough to win the race – he showed big heart today.” Sept. 5, Commentator Stakes, Saratoga, 5 1/2 Furlongs (T). Cannonball was favored at 6-5 and won by a neck after surging in the stretch, Silver Timber (8-5) second. He was outrun to the wire by Cannonball but prevailed over Ahvee's Destiny by a half-length. Six ran. The winning time was a fast 1:00.84. Oct. 10, Grade III Woodford, Keeneland, 5 1/2 Furlongs. Mr. Nightlinger took the lead early on, but Silver Timber crept up on him in the stretch from off the pace and pulled ahead to win the Grade III Woodford Stakes. Timed in 1:04.67 on soft turf, Silver Timber won the 5 1/2-furlong race by a length. Longshot Goldzar finished third. The race wasn't a "Win and You're In" race, and Silver Timber would have to be supplemented into the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. Trainer Chad Brown expressed the desire to move on to the race but said he'd have to talk to the owners. The race produced a formful top-two result, with the winner at 9-5 odds and Mr. Nightlinger at 2-1. However, Goldzar was 25-1. Silver Timber paid $5.80 to win. Julien Leparoux rode the winner. Julien Leparoux, rider of winner Silver Timber: “He sat right behind him (early leader Mr. Nightlinger) all the way, and he finished very strong. Actually, he didn’t really like (the soft ground). I think on the firm ground, he will be much better. He was kinda sliding a little bit around the turn. He could overcome it and win the race.” Chad Brown, trainer of Silver Timber, on claiming Silver Timber for $25,000 in April at Gulfstream Park: “A lot of credit goes to (owner) Mike Dubb. He’d been following the horse and asked me to go look at him that day, so we took him. He just fits well in our program. He just keeps getting better and better, so we’re happy to have him.” SQUARE EDDIE (KY) Trainer: Doug O'Neill Owner: J. Paul Reddam Breeder: Kinghaven Farms Sire (Sire’s Sire, Dam): Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector, Classy 'n Smart) Dam (Dam’s Sire, Dam): Forty Gran (El Gran Senor, Forty Weight) Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 10-2-10-0-0 (22) 3.40 Age: 3 After desperately trying to make the Kentucky Derby following an early-year injury--and finally getting back to the races in the Grade I Toyota Blue Grass, Square Eddie had another injury, missed the Derby and was sidelined. Sept. 29 NOTE: After a Sept. 27 workout at Santa Anita: “He’s probably one work away from a race,” said Dennis O’Neill, brother and associate of trainer O’Neill. “He could run in the Ancient Title (on Oct. 11).” Oct. 11, Grade I Ancient Title Stakes, Santa Anita, Six Furlongs. Square Eddie finshed sixth, beaten five lengths by Gayego. Square Eddie pretty much ran mid-pack throughout in the 10-horse field. Gayego, the 6-5 favorite, was timed in 1:08.28.
