CALUMET FARM KENTUCKY TURF CUP

By Dick Downey
Last Updated Aug. 27, 2017

The Grade III Kentucky Turf Cup is run at the 1 1/2-mile distance used for the Breeders' Cup Turf. The track recognizes it as "the signature race of Kentucky Downs’ live race meet." In 2017, the race was renamed the Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup.

Competitors in the race come from some of the most respected connections in racing -- from owners to trainers to jockeys.

Stars like Chorwon and Silverfoot, who each went on to finish sixth in the 2001 and 2005 runnings of the Breeders' Cup Turf, and Cloudy's Knight, who ran second in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Marathon, have won the race.

Rochester, who won back-to-back runnings of the race in 2002-2003, was multiple stakes-placed after that and raced until 2008, when he was a 12-year-old. In 2005, Rochester won the Grade III Sycamore at Keeneland.

Rahystrada, who won the 2011 edition of the Kentucky Turf Cup, won the Grade III Arlington Handicap and ran third in the prestigious Grade I Arlington Million in 2012 -- then finished second in the Kentucky Turf Cup.

In 2013, Gary Stevens rode at Kentucky Downs, winning the Kentucky Turf Cup aboard Temeraine in his first outing on the track. A diligent master of his trade, Stevens walked the course the evening before the race.

In 2014 Team Block won the race for the second time in three years with Suntracer, bred and owned by the Chicago-based Team Block and trained by Chris Block. Suntracer was ridden by French-born jockey Florent Geroux. In 2012, ownership patriarch David Block said, “We love this racetrack. People from Illinois should look down here and see what’s going on. We also won this race two years ago with Ioya Bigtime." Jeffrey Sanchez was aboard the winner in 2012.

The 2015 and 2016 renditons of the race yielded repeat winner Da Big Hoss, trained by Mike Maker and owned by Skychai Racing.

Well-known trainers like Bill Mott, Graham Motion, Kiaran McLaughlin and Jonathan Sheppard have won the Kentucky Turf Cup, and jockeys who have come away on top include Stevens, Rafael Bejarano, Garrett Gomez and Pat Day.

The 2017 Calument Farm Kentucky Turf Cup will be contested on Saturday, Sept. 9 and carries a purse of $600,000 -- the same as the amount in 2014 and 2015, but 50 percent more than in 2013 and triple the 2012 purse size.
