Local Hero, Senior Investment Work Toward La Derby

By Dick Downey

Local Hero breezed on Monday morning in 1:01 (1/20) flat for five furlongs. Next for Local Hero, third in the Risen Star Stakes after setting the pace, is the Louisiana Derby on April 1.

Regular rider Florent Geroux will likely have the mount, according to the Fair Grounds press office, which used the word "probably".

The son of Hard Spun demolished maiden foes in a mile and 70-yard event on Jan. 26 by 7 1/4 lengths. In the Risen Star, Local Hero ran freely and too quickly on the lead, at one point opening up six lengths. Girvin and runner-up Untrapped caught him in the final quarter mile, and Local Hero held on for third by a neck over LeComte Stakes winner Guest Suite.

Also on the tab for the Louisiana Derby on Monday was Senior Investment. The son of Discreetly Mine worked four furlongs in 48.60 for trainer McPeek and is looking to move forward off a three-length, come-from-behind victory in allowance company at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 18.
