Mastery Out of Surgery

3/13/2017

Back at Baffert Barn

Mastery underwent surgery for his condylar fracture on Monday and was returned to Bob Baffert's barn at Santa Anita.

Baffert said the surgery went well, per a report at DRF.com.

The colt ran perhaps the best Derby prep race of the year on Saturday in the San Felipe Stakes only to go lame just past the finish line. Mike Smith felt Mastery was off and pulled him up. The condylar fracture was diagnosed within an hour after Mastery was vanned off the track.

Whether Mastery will be able to race again after months of recuperation is unknown, and there is no word on whether he'll be retired and if there is any thought the injury will affect his prospects as a stallion. The fracture was sustained in Mastery's left foreleg.

Mastery has won four races in four starts, including three stakes races.
