Classic Empire Balks at Another Workout

One Work Since Late January

By Dick Downey

Classic Empire refused to put in a workout Sunday at Palm Meadows, according to a report.

DRF.com placed calls to trainer Mark Casse and assistant Norman Casse, but the camp had not responded as of early this afternoon. However, a report from Bloodhorse.com says the colt has been shipped to Ocala Training Center. That would indicate some rehab is in the works.

Classic Empire finished third in the Holy Bull Stakes on Feb. 4. A foot abscess appeared a few days later, and when that cleared up, he refused to work when asked. A sore back was identified as the culprit. A few days later, on March 12, Classic Empire breezed for the first time since late January. Sunday would have been his first workout after that.

Classic Empire is said to be pointing to the April 8 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, but his status for the race has to be in doubt at this point.
