Still Possible for Louisiana Derby
Updated March 6, 2018
According to trainer Jonathan Thomas, Catholic Boy remains among a list of possible entrants for the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby on March 24.
On Saturday morning, the son of More Than Ready owned by Robert La Penta and Madaket Stables LLC worked a half-mile in 48.40 at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala. At this post, the workout had not been recorded at Equibase.
Thomas says other options still include the Florida Derby, and now the Wood Memorial is also possible. All three races are on different weekends, and all award the top four finishers Kentucky Derby points on a 100-40-20-10 scale.
“Right now, those three races are all things we have to consider,” Thomas said.
Catholic Boy made his sophomore debut in the Gr. III Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs where he finished second as the favorite behind longshot Flameaway. He currently sits at number 12 on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 14 points. In addition to acquiring four points in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, he earned 10 with a victory in the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
Possible Louisiana Derby entries: Avery Island, Bravazo, Catholic Boy, Dark Templar, Instilled Regard, Lone Sailor, Retirement Fund, Makin A Marc, MG Warrior and Snapper Sinclair.
