KD SELECTIONS BY GARY WEST

Gary West specializes in multiple-race wagers. He is a top handicapper and loves horizontal bets like the pick 3 and pick 4. His resume includes several stints working meets at Kentucky Downs, past president of the National Turf Writers Association, and horse racing reporter for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

2017 Daily Results

Day 5. It was a relatively unpredictable day, with only 60% of winners coming from the four lowest odds horses. The national average is 80%. Despite that, West had six winners in his selections, with three right on top. He doesn't play exactas, and only one exacta hit, paying $33.30 on a $2 bet. His picks ran 2-3, 2-3-4 and1-3-4 in three of the races, what my friend Micah Zajic calls the "not so exacta".

Day 4. West's selections were pretty good considering that it was a difficult handicapping day, with only 50% of winners coming from the four lowest odds horses. From the totality of his selections he had five winners, with two right on top. If we boxed his selections in $2 exacta wagers, which is not how West plays, the cost was $228 and the return was $263.50, for a net profit of $35.50. The best among his four exacta winners was a $199.20 payoff in race 3.

Day 3. West's selections yielded the winner in eight of 10 races. He's not an exacta bettor, but had his selections been boxed in $2 exacta box wagers, the total outlay would have been $228 and the return $246.40, for a net profit of $18.40.

Day 2. You know it's a difficult day when Gary West has only two winners in his overall top 4 selections. Both of those winners were right on top. Boxing his selections in $2 exacta bets, which is not how Gary plays, yielded a loss of $222.00. Gary is a pick 3/pick4 etc. player, and he does well at it.

Day 1. West's selections yielded seven winners, with three of them right on top. Boxing his wagers in $2 exacta bets hit five exactas. From $240 bet in these exactas, there was a return of $306.40, for a net profit of $66.40.

2016 Daily Results

Summary. West's selections yielded 31 winners (62 percent) with 15 of them right on top (30 percent).

Day 5. West's top 4 selections produced six winners, with two right on top. Gary is a horizontal race player. For the record, the selections produced three exactas paying $202.60 on $2 bets at a cost of $240.

Day 4. West had an excellent day with eight winners in his top 4 selections, six of them right on top, including both the stakes winners, and two in the third pew. Four modestly-priced exactas were in those selections, but Gary is a horizontal bet player, and the picks panned out using that strategy. In the first race, the four selections yielded a $1 trifecta payoff of $46.80 and a $1 superfecta payoff of $360.80. A modest trifecta was also hit in race 7.

Day 3. West had six winners in his selections, four of them right on top, one a second choice and one a third choice. Like Dick's Picks on this day, exactas were difficult to find. Exacta boxes pulled from the top 4 picks in each race yielded two hits returning $37.20 on $2 bets. If all races were played this way, and that is not the way Gary plays it, the cost of wagers would be $240. Gary cleared the deck in race 7, with the $1 trifecta paying $16.70 and the $1 superfecta paying $46.20.

Day 2. West's selections yielded five winners from 10 races, with two on top, one listed as a second choice and two listed as fourth choice.  Gary really hit the ball out of the park in race 10. The scratch of his top choice brought Real Creel into the mix and yielded not only the winner and exacta, but also a $1 trifecta payoff of $539.60 and a $1 superfecta payoff of $2,800.00. West's picks in race 3 yielded a $1 trifecta payoff of $56.30 and a $1 superfecta of $194.80. Boxing all of West's selections in $2 exacta wagers cost $240 yielded four winning tickets paying $349.20.

Day 1. West's selections yielded six winners from 10 races, with one on top, three in the second pew, one in the third and one in the fourth. Boxing his selections in $2 exacta wagers costing $184.00 yielded three winning tickets paying $183.40. In Race 7, West's four selections yielded a $1 superfecta payoff of $233.00 and a $1 trifecta payoff of $82.70. Scratches resulted in two selections remaining in one race, and West had the winner.

2015 Daily Results

Day 5. Gary had a good day, hitting five exactas for a return of $339.20 from $268 in wagers, a profit of $71.20. He had seven winners from selections. This was a good showing on a day when only one favorite won in the first 11 of 13 races -- and two favorites finished last.

Day 4. West had eight winners with three right on top. It was a day when it was sometimes tough to make a profit because three winners on the card were even money and didn't generate good-paying exactas, and two winners were 50-1 or more and didn't figure. West had three exactas that returned $64.60 on $256.00 in wagers, a loss of $191.40.

Day 3. From 10 races, West's selections included six winners, three of them right on top. Two exactas were made up in the first and last races returning $135.80 from bets of $216 on $2 boxes.

Day 2. The day was shortened to only two races because track conditions were unsafe after rain. West had both winners right on top to score the double and ran 1/3 in the second race. No exactas were hit from $48 in wagers.

Day 1. West had five winners in his overall selections, including two right on top and two that were second on his lists. He got hot the late in the card, with all five of those winners coming in the last six races. His selections, if boxed in $2 exactas, cost $216 and returned $185.80 for a loss of $30.20. In one race, West's picks comprised a trifecta which paid $254.70 on a $1 bet.

How Gary West's selections fared during the 2014 meet

As stated above, Gary specializes in multiple-race wagers. During four days of the five-day meet, Gary had 37 of 40 winners named in his overall selections.

Daily Results

On Day 1, Gary had three right-on-top winners on the day, but his selections, when boxed, yielded one exacta, leading to a loss of $171.40.

On Day 2, Gary had five right-on-top winners, his overall selections named every winner, and his selections yielded six exactas when boxed. Results show a profit of $26.40. Some exactas were short-priced.

On Day 3, Gary had six right-on-top winners, his overall selections named every winner, and his selections, when boxed, yielded three exactas for a loss of $101.00 -- 204.00 bet and $103.00 returned. It was one of those days. Look for Gary to rebound. Remember, his overall selections yielded all 20 winners during Days 2 and 3.

On Day 4, Gary's selections named two right-on top winners but had eight winners from overall selections. When boxed in $2 exacta bets, his picks yielded four winning exactas with bets costing $240 and returning $192.60 for a loss of $47.40.

How Gary West's selections fared during the 2013 meet

West named 33 of the 50 winners in his overall selections, and 15 of them were right on top. If all of West's selections had been boxed in $2 exacta wagers, the cost was $840 and the return $981.00, for a profit of $141.00 or 16.8%.

Daily Results

On day 5, West's wagers, if boxed in $2 exactas, cost $148 and returned $208.20 for a profit of $60.20. He had two right-on-top winners.

On day 4, West had three right-on-top winners from 13 races. Let's look at his overall selections: If we had played $2 exacta boxes using his picks in the 13 races, the total amount wagered would have been $288 and the return $449.40, a profit of $161.40, which is a return of 56%.

On day 3, West repeated his performance from Day 1; five of his top selections won. That's another good day's work by West. His best bet of the day, Poker Player, came from far off the pace to win race 2. His selections produced four winning exactas. If we had $2 exacta boxed West's selections, costing $152, the return would have been $102.40, a loss of $49.60. Aside from the four winning exactas, West's selections ran 1-3 in three other races and 2-3 in another race.

On day 2, three of his four selections, including most of the speed, were scratched from race 1. West's selections, when $2 boxed, yielded a 40.60 exacta in race 2. Race 3 did not produce much. His three selections in race 4 yielded the two-three finishers. Betting West's selections in exacta boxes in races 2, 3 and 4 cost $48 and returned $40.60, a $7.40 loss.

On day 1, West had five winners from 10 races right on top of his selections. That's a good day's work. If we had boxed his selections in $2 exacta bets, the cost would have been $204.00 and the return $180.40.
