Derby Trail: Where They're Going Next

Next-Race Plans for About 70 Horses on Our Lists

By Dick Downey
The Downey Profile

The Road to the Roses contest is about to begin, and Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens later this week. With that in mind, we bring you next-race plans--and in a few cases, no plan--for about 70 horses.

ALBERGATTI--We don't know yet, but look for him to hop on the Derby Trail after his impressive maiden win on Saturday.

ALTERNATION--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.

ANTHONY'S CROSS--The question is whether he'll have another race before the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

ASTROLOGY--The San Felipe on March 12 looks logical, but there's no official word from the stable.

AWESOME PATRIOT--With six workouts since Jan. 9, will he wait for the March 12 San Felipe or ship out of town to a race like, say, the Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21?

BANDBOX--Based at Laurel, maybe the Gotham Stakes on March 12.

BEAMER--Plans are completely indefinite after the Sam F. Davis, but either the March 12 Tampa Bay Derby or April 3 Florida Derby are possible.

BERT B DON--Gap in workout regimen

BLACK N BEAUTY--Undetermined, but the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth would come three weeks after his allowance race.

BLUE LASER--Plans are unknown. At Palm Meadows, Feb. 7 work was on turf; Feb. 14 work was on dirt. The Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26 would appear logical, keeping him separated from stablemate Brethren. Successful on synthetic track so far.

BRETHREN--The Florida Derby may be in his sights next, but it's too soon to say after his win on Saturday.

CAL NATION--Here's what our Feb. 11 NOTE on him says: "Elliott Walden told Bloodhorse.com that Cal Nation could possibly run in a stakes his next start--and he said the Kentucky Derby hasn't completely been ruled out--but he did say the colt won't be entered in the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26. 'We’re not going to force things with him,' Walden said."

CALEB'S POSSE--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.

CASPER'S TOUCH--Unknown. Either the Fountain on Youth on Feb. 26 or Tampa Bay Derby on March 12 look most likely.

CLUBHOUSE RIDE--He hasn't worked since Jan. 26. If he gets back on the tab, the San Felipe on March 12 or Sunland Derby on March 27 would be next.

COMMA TO THE TOP--No word yet following his clunker on Saturday.

CRIMSON CHINA--Turf allowance Feb. 16 at Gulfstream Park.

CROSSBOW--Hutcheson Stakes on Feb. 26.

DECISIVE MOMENT--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

DIALED IN--Our Feb. 1 NOTE says this: Trainer Zito does not want to wait until the April 3 Florida Derby, but the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth could come up too soon, so an overnight stake the first week of March would be ideal in his estimation. The Tampa Bay Derby is March 12, three weeks before the Florida Derby, and would presumably be too soon before the latter race.

EL GRAYLING--Undetermined, but the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth would come three weeks after his allowance race.

ELITE ALEX--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.

FREE ENTRY--Undetermined, won a GP allowance yesterday.

GLINT--The Southwest on Feb. 21 would not be a total shock.

GOURMET DINNER--No word yet; but the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth wouldn't be out of the question--he last raced Jan. 30 in the Holy Bull.

GRANT JACK--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.

HERON LAKE--Undetermined, not hearing much from Nick Zito about him.

INDIAN WINTER--The San Vicente on Feb. 20.

J P'S GUSTO--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.

J W BLUE--The Rebel Stakes on March 19.

JAYCITO--The San Vicente on Feb. 20.

JUSTIN PHILLIP--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

LAUBURU--Turf work on Feb. 7; at this post, reporting of Feb. 14 works at PMM inomplete.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE--No announced plans yet.

MACHEN--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

MANICERO--Pasco Stakes winner skipped the Sam F. Davis but is working steadily at Calder, so we believe the Feb. 26 Hutcheson is next.

MONZON--Plans for Sam F. Davis fifth finisher not known. Perhaps ship back North for the Gotham??

MUCHO MACHO MAN--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

NACHO BUSINESS--Love his name. Second career start after Jan. 30 maiden-breaker not known. He is TC-nominated.

PANTS ON FIRE--Since he was taken to Palm Meadows from Fair Grounds after the Lecomte, we thought the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth would be next, but he was entered in the Risen Star.

POSITIVE RESPONSE--Not known; finished third in the El Camino Real on Feb. 12.

PREACHINTOTHEDEVIL--The Gotham on March 5.

PREMIER PEGASUS--The San Vicente on Feb. 20.

QUAIL HILL--The San Felipe on March 12 or the Sunland Derby on March 27.

RIVETING REASON---Owner/trainer not afraid to ship but we suspect he'll stay at Santa Anita for the Santa Anita Derby. Owner/trainer has started him a number of times, so the San Felipe on March 12 wouldn't be a surprise following close loss in the Bob Lewis.

ROCKING OUT--Upset loss in GP allowance on Feb. 13 means it's time to regroup.

ROGUE ROMANCE--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

RUNFLATOUT--The San Felipe on March 12.

RUSTLER HUSTLER--Gap in workout regimen noted after Jan. 28.

SANTIVA--The Risen Star on Feb. 19.

SHACKLEFORD--Wouldn't be shocked to see him in the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth following Feb. 5 allowance win.

SILVER MEDALLION--Winner of the El Camino Real has only run on turf and synthetic, so will he be tried on dirt, or will they keep him on his preferred surface to have a better shot at making the Kentucky Derby?

SINAI--He's ot being mentioned for the San Vicente, so the assumption is that he's pointing to either an out-of-town race or the San Felipe on March 12.

SOLDAT--The Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26.

SOVEREIGN DEFAULT--Following tough beat by Crossbow on Jan. 29, will Sovereign Default try him again in the Feb. 26 Hutcheson, or will he stretch out. Here's what trainer Violette said on Jan. 30: "We have lots of options now. I’ll nominate him to everything and wait to see how he comes out of this race before making any plans.”

SPLASH POINT--The UAE Derby on March 26, probably.

STAY THIRSTY--Still pointed to the March 5 Gotham although it's now being said he's on a tight schedule.

SWAY AWAY--The San Vicente on Feb. 20.

SWEET DUCKY--The Florida Derby is a definite target, and connections have been leaning toward skipping the Fountain of Youth.

TAPIZAR--There's no telling after what happened in the Bob Lewis.

THE FACTOR--Waiting to see if he'll make the San Vicente following a workout today, Feb. 14.

TIZ BLESSED--Gap in his workout regimen since Jan. 24.

TO HONOR AND SERVE--The Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26.

TOBY'S CORNER--Presumably the Whirlaway winner will start next in the March 5 Gotham Stakes.

TURBULENT DESCENT--She was nominated to the Triple Crown, so will we see her against boys in the San Felipe? It's not known yet.

TWINSPIRED--We're looking for the WEBN winner to take on the John Battaglia Memorial on March 5.

WILKINSON--Looks like he'll wait for the Louisiana Derby on March 26.

WINCHILL--Gap in his workout regimen noted after Jan. 30.

UNCLE MO--The Tampa Bay Derby on March 12.

YANKEE PASSION--The Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21.
