Astrology Finally Comes Out in Sunland Derby

Astrology finally makes his 2011 debut in Sunday's Grade III Sunland Derby at Sunland Park, New Mexico. The winner will take home half the $800,000 purse.

While some believed Garrett Gomez would have the mount on the Grade III Iroquois winner, Julien Leparoux will ride Astrology. It will be Leparoux's debut in the saddle of the son of A.P. Indy. Astrology is the 5-2 morning line favorite and will break from the far outside post in the field of 11.

"He's a graded stakes-winning colt with a tremendous pedigree," trainer Steve Asmussen said. "The Sunland Derby is an ambitious start for his 3-year-old debut, but there's a tremendous amount at stake considering the impressive individual he is. There's a lot of questions. But one thing, I feel very good about the health and condition of the horse right now. He's an absolutely beautiful individual, but it's a tall order to go a mile and an eighth off the bench."

Fusa Code broke his maiden winning the local Sunland Derby prep race, the 1 1/16-mile Borderland Derby, and he's also been entered by Asmussen. Others from the Borderland Derby are Behold de Buy, who finished second, R Skydiver (fourth), and It's My Party (seventh).

Nacho Saint was shipped in from New York by trainer Kelly Breen and has been working over the track, including a breeze this past weekend. He was fourth behind Stay Thirsty in the Grade III Gotham last time out.  Breen also entered stablemate Ruler On Ice, an allowance winner who raced at Parx last time out. Both Nacho Saint and Ruler on Ice are owned by George and Lori Hall.

Zayat Stables' Sinai is in the race for Bob Baffert after finishing fifth in the Grade II San Vicente behind The Factor. He tries two turns for the first time.

Beer Meister and Twice the Appeak come into the Sunland Derby from the Turf Paradise Derby, in which they ran one-two.

Jinks Fires has shipped in Supreme Ruler from Oaklawn Park and makes his stakes debut after breaking his maiden in January and running second in an allowance a month ago.
