Trainer John Terranova said Tuesday morning that he has secured the services of Garrett Gomez to ride Rushaway winner Swift Warrior in the Grade I Toyota Blue Grass. Gomez won the 2006 Toyota Blue Grass on Sinister Minister.
Swift Warrior scored a front-running, two-length victory in the Rushaway on March 26 at Turfway Park in his first start for Terranova. Warrior led from wire to wire in prevailing over probable Toyota Blue Grass foe Crimson China.
“We got him toward the end of January, gave him some time to freshen up and let him tell us when he was ready,” Terranova said. “We thought about the Spiral, but he had been off for a while and not been on synthetic, so we thought we’d concentrate on getting a good start back. There was a lack of speed in the race. Plus, he was fresh off the layoff, and if he broke running, just let him do his thing.”
Swift Warrior galloped 11/2 mile today under exercise rider Eliel De Jesus. Terranova said the First Samurai colt would have his final work for the Toyota Blue Grass sometime between Saturday and Monday.
It was a routine morning for other Toyota Blue Grass hopefuls on the grounds.
Rushaway runner-up Crimson China galloped 11/2 mile under Heather Craig, assistant to trainer Graham Motion; Tropical Park Derby winner King Congie jogged early under Dan Blacker, assistant to trainer Tom Albertrani; and graded stakes-placed Willcox Inn galloped 11/2 mile under exercise rider Freddy Alvarado.
