Trainer John Shirreffs made a quick trip from California to Keeneland to oversee the Friday work of Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup winner Harmonious, scheduled to make her next start in the Filly & Mare Turf. With Frankie Herrarte aboard, the 3-year-old Dynaformer filly covered five furlongs in 1:05.80.
“We wanted to give her a nice easy workout today,” said Shirreffs. “We didn’t want her to do a lot, just stretch her legs a little.”
Harmonious remained at Keeneland after she won the QE II on Oct. 16. Shirreffs said the filly, who also won the Grade I American Oaks at Hollywood Park in July, would ship to Churchill on Monday. She will be ridden in the Breeders’ Cup by Joel Rosario, who was aboard her in the QE II.
Harmonious’ local rivals in the Breeders’ Cup will include Grade I Juddmonte Spinster third-place finisher Hot Cha Cha and two horses that have worked at Keeneland in October, champion Forever Together and Keertana.
Shirreffs was scheduled to depart Lexington around 1:30 p.m. today. Tomorrow at Hollywood Park, he'll watch Zenyatta have her final work before she defends her title in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Zenyatta is to leave California for Kentucky on Tuesday.
