Sam F. Davis Draws Broad Array to Tampa

The 10 entries in the Grade III Sam F. Davis Stakes possess an interesting array from Kentucky racing royalty to a New York transplant to the nitty-gritty of South Florida.

At the top of the list, of course, is WinStar Farm's Brethren. The son of Distorted Humor has only two races on his resume, but his reputation precedes him, and it's a prodigious one. He opened his career with a blazing six-furlong win at Belmont Park timed in 1:08.88 before winning at a mile at Churchill Downs last Fall.

Brethren brings a series of six Palm Meadows workouts into the race, and they show him being brought along patiently. From the outside post, the Todd Pletcher trainee will be ridden by Ramon Dominguez for the first time. Former rider Garrett Gomez will be out in California riding Tapizar.

Behind Brethren's 5-2 morning line is that of Monzon at 3-1. He was last seen winning the Count Fleet Stakes, defeating J J's Lucky Train, who came back to finish second in the Whirlaway, and Pants on Fire, who finished second in the Grade III Lecomte in his next outing. Trained by Ignacio Correas, Monzon was taken south after the Count Fleet and last worked at Classic Mile in Ocala. Edgar Prado has the mount for the third straight time on Monzon, who has six starts under his belt.

Washington's Rules, a son of Roman Ruler, is 9-2 and has been entered by trainer Ken McPeek off a maiden win at Gulfstream Park in his second start--and the first off a five-month layoff. Kent Desormeaux returns for the ride.

Beamer, who's been at Palm Meadows with Brethren, broke his maiden at Tampa in his second start, then finished a distant third to rising dirt star Soldat on Jan. 21 at Gulfstream Park. The Carl Nafzger trainee is 5-1 and will get the services of local hero Leandro Goncalves in the saddle.

The only other horse with a single-digit morning line is Watch Me Go at 8-1. A veteran of seven starts, he most recently won a Tampa allowance by eight lengths. He's never had success in stakes races. Trained by Kathleen O'Connell, Luis Garcia will handle the reins.

At 12-1 are Adulare, an entry by trainer Rusty Arnold who broke his maiden in his fifth start on Jan. 2; and the interesting Too Experience, who will team with Daniel Centeno for trainer Mark Passley after winning five of six races.

Rounding out the field are Litigate, a 15-1 shot under the care of David Duggan; and Reprized Halo and Ribo Bobo, both listed at 20-1, and both hailing from Manuel Azpura's barn at Calder.
