Elite Alex Works Toward Louisiana Derby

3/20/2011

After scratching from the Grade II Rebel Stakes Saturday, Elite Alex worked today at Oaklawn Park with jockey Calvin Borel aboard. Elite Alex drew post 12 in the 13-horse Louisiana Derby, which is run at 1 1/8th mile.

Third in the Southwest in his last race, the son of Afleet Alex clocked five furlongs in 1:00.80 in company with Cash McCool, who was caught going the same distance in 1:02.00.

“Nothing unusual. He worked OK,” said trainer Tim Ritchey. “It was just what we would normally do, and he galloped out strong.”
