Trainer Patrick Biancone said today that Bowman’s Causeway will join the cast set to run in the Grade I Florida Derby on April. 3.
The trainer said the colt’s third-place finish in a mile allowance race on March 19 will set him up for a strong run. Biancone said before the allowance race that his colt needed a race to make-up for what he described as lazy behavior while training in the morning. Bowman’s Causeway ran evenly behind Dance City and Cal Nation, checking in 1-3/4 lengths back of those two and nearly nine lengths clear of the fourth horse in a short field.
“It was exactly what we wanted. It was a good workout for him,” Biancone said. “He ran very good, and now we just need to go up. There is no easy competition when you run in a Grade I. We’ll take a shot.
“We’ll stay home," Biancone said, ruling out the Grade I Wood Memorial. "We are based in Florida, and Gulfstream has been very good to us. The owner lives in Florida, so we prefer to stay here.”
