Only A Dozen in the Belmont?

Jerry Bossert of the New York Daily News writes that there looks to be a field of 12 in the Belmont Stakes. He lists them as follows:

Alternation (Ramon Dominguez)
Animal Kingdom (John Velazquez)
Brilliant Speed (undecided)
Master of Hounds (Garrett Gomez)
Monzon (undecided)
Mucho Macho Man (Rajiv Maragh)
Nehro (Corey Nakatani)
Prime Cut (undecided)
Ruler On Ice (Jose Valdivia)
Santiva (Shaun Bridgmohan)
Shackleford (Jesus Castanon)
Stay Thirsty (undecided)

Last week, the New York Racing Association press office released a list of 19 probables/possibles for the race. Missing from Bossert's list are:

--Anthony's Cross, who hasn't put in a workout since April 18 for trainer Eion Harty.
--Awesome Patriot, winner of the Alydar Stakes on May 8 for trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert has declared him out of the Belmont.
--Harlan's Hello, one of a duo trained by Doodnauth Shivmangal.
--Isn't He Perfect, ninth in the Preakness for Shivmangal.
--Jaycito, who still hasn't worked for Baffert since April 2. Baffert says he's a no-go for the Belmont.
--Tech Fall, winner of an allowance race at Delaware Park on April 30. He's entered in a one-mile allowance/optional claimer at Parx on Monday for Tony Dutrow.
--Uncle Sam, second in the Alydar and who's entered in Monday's Lone Star Derby for Baffert.

Dialed In is definitely out of consideration for the Belmont.

The Belmont Stakes is limited to 16 starters. Here's what the condition book says will happen if more than 16 are entered.

"In the event more than 16 entries pass through the entry box at the closing, the starters will be determined at the closing with the first eight (8) starters given preference by accumulating the highest earning in Graded Sweepstakes at a mile or over....

"The next five (5) starters will be determined by accumulating the highest earnings (lifetime) in all non-restricted sweepstakes. Non-restricted Sweepstakes" shall mean those sweepstakes whose conditions contain no restrictions other than age or sex.....

"The remaining three (3) starters shall be determined by accumulating the highest earnings in all races. Should this preference produce any ties the additional starter(s) shall be determined by lot.....

"The above conditions notwithstanding any horse which earns purse money in either The Kentucky Derby or The Preakness Stakes shall be included in the initial eight (8) starters of The Belmont Stakes."

The Belmont Stakes purse will be divided 60% to the winner, 20% to second, 11% to third, 6% to fourth and 3% to fifth.
