Nehro, second in the Kentucky Derby on May 7, breezed for the second time since the race today at Churchiill Downs.
The son of Mineshaft breeezed six furlongs in 1:12.20 (1/4) on a track rated fast. It was the first workout for Nehro on something other than a sloppy track since he arrived in Louisville in April.
On May 16, Nehro breezed four furlongs in :50.80 (17/27) at the track. He didn't put in a recorded workout on May 23.
Today's breeze came in company with stable mate Dominus, who was narrowly edged by Machen in the Grade III Derby Trial at Churchill on opening night. Dominus was timed in exactly the same time as Nehro. However, Nehro was beaten a length to wire.
Fractions were :12.00, :24.20, :36.20, :48.00, and 1:00. Nehro galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25.60 and a mile in 1:39.00. Carlos Rosas was aboard Nehro.
Trainer Steve Asmussen was pleased with the move.
“In his defense, it’s probably the first time he’s got to work on a fast track in about two months," Asmussen said. "I think you saw why we were not wanting a sloppy track for the Derby. I feel really good about Nehro and the rest of the year for him.”
