Rick Dutrow Trainer License Suspended Ten Years

By Dick Downey

Bloodhorse.com reports that the trainer's license of Rick Dutrow, Jr. has been revoked for 10 years. Dutrow is 52 years old.

Citing what they called a pattern of rules violations, the three-member State Racing and Wagering Board took the action. The penalty imposed could have been more severe. The board overruled the recommendation by hearing officer Clemente Parente that Dutrow be banned for life and fined $50,000.

In addition to the revocation, Dutrow has been ordered to stay off the grounds of all New York tracks during the revocation period.

A reference was made to violations of rules by Dutrow in nine states and 15 different tracks; and 69 separate violations since 1979 were cited in the decision.

The revocation is to commence next week. “If we have even a smell of third party training here, we’re not going to look kindly on it,” said board chairman John Sabini.

At a hearing held in June, Dutrow said, “I wouldn’t do something improper with any of my horses. I’ve done really good in the game…and I wouldn’t risk that for anything."

Dutrow is expected to take the matter to court and to ask a judge to put a stay on the suspension.
