Awesome Belle Romps in My Dear Girl

10/15/2011

By Dick Downey

Blowing away her nearest rival by 7 1/2 lengths, Awesome Belle won the Florida Stallion My Dear Girl Stakes going 1 1/6 mile. The juvenile filly was timed in 1:47.46.

Awesome Belle dictated a slow pace, setting initial fractions of :25.05, :49.97, and 1:14.58. Macanuda and 5-2 favorite Queen Drama chased her down the backstretch and around the turn at a disadvantage of 1 1/2 to two lengths. When they straightened for home, Awesome Belle, ridden by Luis Jurado, had plenty of gas left in the tank and drew off.

It was the second career win for Awesome Belle, who broke her maiden at Calder in May. That was followed by the J J's Dream Stakes, in which she ran a close second to Redbud Road. She was fifth next time out and then hit the board third in the Florida Stallion Susan's Girl.

Trainer Stanley Gold added blinkers to Awesome Belle for the My Dear Girl, and she went right to the lead for the first time since she broke her maiden.

Macanuda hung on for second, and Redbud Road came on late to get third. The remaining order of finish was Dream Point, Sinister Brew, Queen Drama, The Winner Is and Adela's Song.

Jacks or Better Farm bred and owns Awesome Belle, a daughter of Awesome of Course. She's out of the Bayou Hebert mare Bayou Plans. The win put her record at six starts, all at Calder, with two wins, a second and two thirds. She added $-- of the $300,000 purse to prior earnings of $64,077.
