Breeders' Cup notes from Churchill Downs, Et Al

10/19/2011

Her Smile, winner of the Grade I Prioress at Belmont Park this year for owner Bobby Flay, will be pointed to the one-mile, Grade II Chilukki on the undercard of Breeders’ Cup Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Her Smile finished sixth after a troubled trip in the Charles Town Oaks in her most recent start.

Dark Thunder, winner of four consecutive sprints in New York, will be pointed to the $85,000 The Jimmy V on Breeders’ Cup Friday. Also trained by Pletcher, Dark Thunder captured the Island Whirl Stakes at Saratoga by 5 3/4 lengths.

General Quarters, a multiple grade I winner of more than $1.2 million, looks like a no-show for this year's Breeders' Cup. He's likely to appear next in the Grade II Fayette at Keeneland on Oct. 29. He's stabled at Churchill Downs in Barn 37.

The 2010 Juvenile Fillies winner Awesome Feather breezed at Belmont Park today, going four furlongs in :49.80 (6/10). Earlier this month, she won her first start since last year's Breeders' Cup.

Filly & Mare Sprint contender Turbulent Descent worked six furlongs in 1:11.40 (1/5) at Hollywood Park.

Leading sprinter The Factor, who ran off the board in the Grade I Ancient Title, went a fast four furlongs in :46.20 (3/49) at Santa Anita. Also working for Bob Baffert was 2-year-old Drill, second to Creative Cause in the Grade I Norfolk. Drill was timed in :59.40 (4/39) for five furlongs.
