Dettori Ruled Off, Will Miss Breeders' Cup Saturday

10/29/2011

By Dick Downey

Officials ruled Frankie Dettori caused another rider to fall at Newbury and handed him a seven-day suspension starting Nov. 5.

Apprentice rider Harry Bentley and Right Step crashed at the two-furlong pole after being tightened up by Dettori on Willing Foe. Horse and jockey were unhurt, but  Dettori was cited for careless riding. It all happened several days ag.

With the ban beginning on Breeders' Cup Saturday, Dettori said he would be unable to ride in Louisville--or anywhere else--that day but would come on Friday.

"I thought there was room to go across, but it didn't work out. At least I can ride Nahrain in America on the Friday," the jockey said.

Nahrain and is undefeated and won the Group 1 Prix De L'Opera on Arc weekend. She was pre-entered by trainer Roger Varian in the Filly & Mare Turf. Varian also entered Farraaj in the Juvenile Turf, to be run on Saturday. Neil Callan will pinch-hit for Dettoir on Farraaj, who missed a start in the Racing Post Trophy after Varian feared he had come down with an infection.

"Farraaj didn't scope well, and we took the precaution of pulling him out, but by Saturday morning he was fine and could probably have run. I was quoted as saying there were not many options left for him but the Breeders' Cup people contacted us. He is back looking a million dollars," Varian told the London Mail.
