El Padrino, Others Breeze in South Florida

By Dick Downey

El Padrino, being prepared for the Grade I Florida Derby,  breezed five furlongs in 1:01.22 (3/13) Sunday morning at Palm Meadows.

“It was a very good work with a strong gallop out,” said trainer Todd Pletcher.

El Padrino was an impressive allowance winner at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 29 and shipped to New Orleans to win the Grade II Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 25.

News Pending

News Pending, second at 27-1 odds in the Grade II Fountain of Youth behind Union Rags, breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream in 1:02.40 (19/30) for trainer Dale Romans. Romans said he's still weighing several options for News Pending's next start.

A son of Harlan’s Holiday, News Pending has run three times at the Gulfstream meet, breaking his maiden on turf on Dec. 22 and finishing second in a turf allowance on Feb. 5 before the Fountain of Youth.

Other South Florida workouts today, all at Palm Meadows:

--Heavy Breathing went four furlongs in :48.22 (9/37), breezing, at Palm Meadows. He's set to start in next Saturday's Grade III Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes.

--Our Entourage, said to be pointed to the Grade I Wood Memorial, breezed five furlongs in 1:01.22 (3/13).

--Unbridled's Way breezed four in :48.09 (4/37).
