I'll Have Another, under the radar since winning the Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes, is still on the road to the Grade I Santa Anita Derby.
“He ran so well fresh off a five-month rest, and now he’s earned just about enough money to get into the Kentucky Derby, so we figured we wouldn’t be too tough on him and keep him fresh for the Santa Anita Derby,” is the way trainer Doug O'Neill explains it.
Among others, Grade II San Felipe Stakes winner Creative Cause and runner-up Bodemeister are also heading for the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby, along with Liaison, fourth in the San Felipe.
“Hopefully I’ll Have Another will run big in the Santa Anita Derby, come out of it good, and it’s on to Louisville,” O’Neill said.
I'll Have Another was under the radar, he was off the radar after finishing sixth by 19 lengths in the Grade I Hopeful at Saratoga as a 2-year-old last Sept. 5. That was his last start before the Lewis.
“He’s not a one-race horse,” cautioned O’Neill. “That’s the one thing we talk about at the barn. We’re all awed by his race in the Bob Lewis, but we were also awed by his debut and his runner-up finish in the Best Pal. He’s always shown a lot of talent, so we’re just hoping he keeps moving forward.”
On Feb. 23, I'll Have Another worked four in :48.60 (5/20) at HOL.
On March 3, I'll Have Another worked six in 1:10.00 (1/4) at SA.
On March 12, I'll Have Another worked a mile in 1:42.60 (1/1) at HOL.
