Pletcher Looking at Two for Arkansas Derby

3/31/2012

Todd Pletcher may send both Stat and Heavy Breathing to the Grade I Arkansas Derby on April 14.

Stat will get an important breeze Sunday morning at Palm Meadows preceding a decision on what's next for him. The son of Unbridled's Song exits an impressive optional allowance win at Gulfstream Park on March 17. He was runner-up in the Grade II Saratoga Special last summer behind top-ranked Union Rags.

"He's doing good and has picked it up lately," said Pletcher. "He'll have that breeze, and we'll see how he does."

Heavy Breathing would make a relatively quick turnaround after finishing a fading third in the Grade III Vinery Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on March 24. That was his first career loss after dominating two races in Florida.

"He was on the lead in the Spiral and went 23 and 46," said Pletcher offering an alibi for that first loss. "It looks like that was pretty ambitious on the front-end."
