Russian Greek to Dorochenko, Blue Grass
By Dick Downey
Gennadi Dorochenko could get in the Kentucky Derby yet.
Russian-born trainer Gennadi Dorochenko, owner trainer of 109-1 Louisiana Derby winner Hero of Order, will enter Russian Greek in the Grade I Toyota Blue Grass.
Hero of Order wasn't nominated to the Triple Crown, and so the possiblity that he will make the Kentucky Derby is between slim and none -- and slim just left town. But Russian Greek is nominated.
Russian Greek, formerly trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, most recently finished eighth in the Grade II Vinery Racing Spiral after breaking from post 1. After that race, the former California-based colt remained in Kentucky and was placed with his new handler.
He's owned by Olympia Star Inc., which is Mikhail “Michael” Yanakov, who hails from the same Russian hometown as Dorochenko.
Yanakov, who competed in Russian racing, has run horses in the U. S. for about three years and has about 25 horses in training, according to a Keeneland release. His horses are primarily based at Hollywood Park.
Yanakov lives in Lexington and has broodmares at Considine Farm. Yanakov bought Russian Greek, bred by Overbrook Farm, as a weanling for $100,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
Russian Greek might breeze at Keeneland this weekend. No decision has yet been made on a jockey.
