Isn't He Clever Out; Liaison Works, Shippers from Keeneland Due

By Dick Downey

Trainer Steve Asmussen reported Wednesday that Isn't He Clever has been withdrawn from consideration for the Kentucky Derby. Optimizer is now number 21 on the graded earnings list.

Today at Churchill Downs, Liaison worked six furlongs in 1:12.80 under urging by Shaun Bridgmohan. His splits were :12.60, :24.80, :37.00 and 1:00.80. The work was originally erroneously reported to be five furlongs.

“I liked his gallop yesterday,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “He’s a very lazy worker, and today I sent him out with no company, and Shaun did an excellent job with him.”

Winner of the Real Quiet and Grade I CashCall Futurity last year at Hollywood Park, Liaison is winless in three 2012 starts, all of them at Santa Anita.

“He did not like Santa Anita at all. It was too hard for him,” Baffert said. “This track is a lot softer. He still has a lot to prove, but he is training well and looks well.”

Meanwhile, in news from Keeneland, Union Rags and Went the Day Well are both scheduled to be vanned to Churchill Downs on Thursday, weathering permitting. Both are scheduled to work at Churchill this weekend.
