My Adonis Joins Belmont Field

6/6/2012

By Dick Downey

My Adonis, who was last seen finishing third in the Canonero II Stakes at Pimlico, was a last-minute entry in the Belmont Stakes. His owners won the Belmont last year with Ruler On Ice.

George and Lori Hall said Ramon Dominguez is expected to ride My Adonis for trainer Kelly Breen.

The Halls would the first owners to register back-to-back triumphs in the Belmont Stakes in 39 years.  Meadow Stable's Riva Ridge and Secretariat won the Belmont in 1972 and 1973.

“We came to this decision only a few hours ago,” said Lori Hall late Tuesday. “Over the last seven to 10 days, he’s really shown to be eating well and to looking the part. We’ve just kind of kept in the back of our minds that this could be a possibility, and Kelly called us today and said, ‘I’m getting that good vibe.’”

Ruler On Ice upset last year's Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and Preakness winner Shackleford at odds of 24-1.

The addition of My Adonis could bring the prospective field to 12. If Unstoppable U is not entered, it would take the field back to 11.
