Ladies Turf Draws Full, Competitive Field

By Dick Downey
NOTE: Updated Sept. 5 with revised weight information

(FRANKLIN, KY) The one-mile Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf has attracted a balanced field of 12, with several jockeys and trainers returning to the Franklin, Ky. track seeking $75,000 in purse money.

Ruthville  weighs in on top carrying 123 pounds. Save two, all other runners will carry 121 pounds.

Ruthville, a 5-year-old winner of four races from 11 career starts, comes into the race with a win and a second in three starts this year. Trained by Mike Stidham, Ruthville most recently won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes after shipping from her home base at Arlington Park. Brian Hernandez, Jr. gets the call; it's one of eight horses he's named to ride on Saturday.

East meets West for She Spirit di Su, a California invader packing 120 pounds trained by Andrew McKeever. The 3-year-old filly was off the board in two earlier stakes tries, but she won the $50,000 Horseman of the Year Stakes at Santa Rosa on July 28. She comes back after a short break. The Irish-bred She Spirit di Su has five board hits in nine starts. David Cohen comes in from New York for the mount.

Trainer George Arnold II comes into town with six entries on Saturday, including two in the Ladies Turf -- Sea Level Drive and Halloween Party.

Sea Level Drive carries a resume of five graded stakes starts, but only one board hit from those efforts. She comes to Kentucky Downs off a May layoff; she finished sixth in the Grade III Arlington Matron Stakes last time out. Turfway Park veteran Victor Lebron will ride Sea Level Drive. Lebron was two-for-21 in the 2011 win column at Kentucky Downs and three-for-21 the year before.

The well-bred Halloween Party, to be ridden by Fabio Arguello, Jr., has two stakes efforts -- both yielding off-the-board results -- in 11 starts. But she'll be looking for her third win in six starts this year as she tries tougher company once again. She's been prepared at Keeneland.

Sure to attract attention on Saturday because of her connections, Quick Praise comes in from her Churchill Downs base for trainer Greg Foley, who has four starters on Saturday's card. Last year, Foley had five top-three placings from eight starts. Corey Lanerie, well-known on the Kentucky circuit, will be in the irons. Lanerie had only one win from 14 starters at the 2011 Kentucky Downs meet, but he has over $76 million in career purse winnings.

Miz Ida, carrying 120 pounds, will be ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, who has five mounts on the card. Bridgmohan won two of four starts at the track in 2012. Steve Margolis trains Miz Ida. He was winless from four starters last year, but in 2010 he had a win and a place from two starters. As for Miz Ida, she either wins or doesn't show much. She has four victories, no places and no shows from seven starts, six of them on turf.

Ridgester was most recently a persistent third behind Salty Strike in the Grade III Gardenia Stakes at Ellis Park for trainer Rick Hiles. Gabriel Saez takes over for Brian Hernandez, Jr., who defected to Ruthville. Ridgester has been on the board in four of her last five starts.

Whisked Away tried the Grade I Vinery Madison Stakes on Polytrack at Keeneland in April but finished far up the track and out of the money for trainer Rowena Beck. After a four-month layoff, Whisked Away finished eighth in a $56,000 allowance race on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs. She wheels back at Kentucky Downs under John McKee.

Affair Dabbler, trained by David Kassen, will try for her third straight win after coming out on top in a pair of optional claimers on the turf at Arlington Park. Inosencio Diego has the mount.

Charming She, trained by Paul Brown, Jr. will be ridden by perennial Kentucky Downs rider Greta Kuntzweiler. The jockey had a combined 41 starts over eight racing days and 60 races during the 2010-2011 Kentucky Downs meets. Charming She has a pair of wins to go with two seconds at Indiana Downs and Ellis Park in five starts this year. The Ladies Turf will be only her second stakes try -- she was fifth, beaten 8 1/2 lengths in her only other such race.

That came in the West Virginia Senate President's Cup Stakes at Mountaineer, where Brilliant Future finished third, beaten only 3 3/4 lengths under Calvin Borel. Borel, the three-time Kentucky Derby winner, comes back on Saturday for Brilliant Future and trainer Joan Scott. Borel is also a Kentucky Downs veteran. Most recently, he had two wins from six starts, with a place and show, in 2011.

Queen's Award, trained by Eduardo Caramori, has a win in eight starts this year. After spending last winter at Gulfsteam Park, she has been campaigned mainly at Indiana Downs. The Ladies Turf will be her stakes debut. Marcelino Pedroza has career earnings of only a little over $3 million -- but almost $1.5 million of that has come in 2012 alone. He's been named on six mounts Saturday, including Queen's Award.

Don't look for a horse for the course. None of the entries has ever run at Kentucky Downs.

The Ladies Turf is the feature race 8 on a card that also features the $75,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Dash and the $75,000 Franklin-Simpson Mile. First post is 1:35 local time, 2:35 ET.
