It's Good Lord in the Turf Dash
By Dick Downey
(Franklin, KY) Good Lord won the Kentucky Downs Turf Dash today at the Franklin, Ky. track. Run at six furlongs, Good Lord was timed in 1:18.58 for on a yielding, tiring track.
Having set two straight track records coming into the race, Good Lord was the 3-1 second choice on the morning line. However, he was off the board in his only prior turf race, and he was sent off at 6-1 by bettors. Good Lord returned $14.00 to win, $7.60 to place and $4.20 to show.
Good Lord is owned by Doug Shank and Stan Young of nearby Bowling Green, and the winner's circle was crowded after the race.
Gabriel Saez was aboard the winner and was happier than he thought he might be once the running was over. "In the beginning down the hill, I sat back a little bit. We were between horses," the jockey said. "By the time we turned for home, we got through. He's a game horse. The track is a little soft. Most of the horses are getting tired. He handled it well; I was a little surpised."
"I wasn't worried about (his off-the-board finish in his sole turf start)," trainer Forrest Kaelin said. "I worked him on the turf at Ellis Park. Right now, he'd run over anybody. He's just real good right now."
