Borel's Return to the Races Nears

By Dick Downey

Calvin Borel was told by his doctor today that he needs at least one more week to heal his broken wrist, so Borel will not be riding this coming week at Oaklawn, agent Jerry Hissam told Oaklawn Park officials.

Borel's injury has delayed the one victory he needs to get 5,000 career wins -- and to become the 25th member of an elite club. Borel, a three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby, injured his wrist in a starting gate mishap during morning training on Jan. 8.

If his recuperation progresses, Borel hopes to ride at Oaklawn next week. Oaklawn and the City of Hot Springs are prepared to distribute commemorative trading cards on the day he wins his 5,000th race. Only those at the track will receive cards.
