Will Take Charge, winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 21, got back on the worktab Thursday morning at Oaklawn Park. Posting the second-fastest move of the day at four furlongs, he was timed in :48.80, breezing, over a fast track. Alternation posted the bullet work at a the distance.
“I was glad to see this from him,” said trainer D. Wayne Lukas. “I told the exercise rider to go in 49, so that was almost perfect. It was just a maintenance half mile, but there were a couple of horses who broke off in front of him, and he was pretty aggressive. He’s come back good and we’re still looking at the Southwest or Rebel with him.”
The Grade III Southwest Stakes is Monday, Feb. 18. Will Take Charge, a half-brother to Take Charge Indy, has two wins from five starts, with earnings of $184,171. He garnered 10 Kentucky Derby points with his Smarty Jones win and is in tenth place in the standings.
