Dewey Square Squared Away for Palm Beach

2/24/2013

Sunday at Gulfstream Park, Dewey Square put in five-furlong turf breeze in 1:00.80 (3/4) and was pronounced ready for the Grade III Palm Beach Stakes a week hence. It would be the colt's turf debut.

Bambazonki, also pointed to the 1 1/8-mile Palm Beach, was timed 1:01.00 (4/4) for the same distance.

“He’s breezed on turf several times now and I’m pretty confident he likes it,” said trainer Dale Romans of Dewey Square. “He’s not off the Derby Trail. If things go well in the Palm Beach, we’ll run in the Blue Grass at Keeneland."

A son of Bernardini, Dewey Square was taken to Gulfstream with high expectations for dirt racing after three starts as a 2-year-old. After winning his debut at Hoosier Park in September by 11 lengths, he won an allowance race at Churchill Downs in late October and finished a good third in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill, beaten 1 1/2 length.

Things changed this year. Dewey Square ran poorly in the Grade III Holy Bull Stakes, finishing a distant seventh behind Itsmyluckyday after not liking dirt in his face. That's when Romans changed gears.

Bambazonki is a proven stakes-class performer on turf for trainer Chris Block. He broke his maiden at Arlington Park in September after a runner-up debut on Polytrack. The son of Hard Spun won a Keeneland allowance on turf and finished a close second to odds-on favorite Charming Kitten in the $100,000 Kittens Joy Stakes over the Gulfstream course on Jan. 20.

Charming Kitten is also set for the Palm Beach and will likely be the favorite. A son of Kitten’s Joy, won his sire's namesake race for trainer Todd Pletcher after losing a half-length decision as the favorite in the Dania Beach Stakes on Dec. 15.
