Violence Off Derby Trail with Sesamoid Fracture

By Dick Downey

Violence has sustained a fracture to the medial, or inside, sesamoid of his right foreleg and is off the Kentucky Derby Trail.

The fracture was detected yesterday after his second place finish in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

The injury is not life-threatening, and Violence, who's been stabled at Palm Meadows, is still at Gulfstream Park. The colt will be shipped to owner Steven Marshall’s farm in Versailles, Ky. this week for further evaluation and recuperation.

“It’s such a disappointment to see such a promising colt sustain an injury,” said trainer Todd Pletcher.  “He’s been training beautifully and made such an impressive effort in his second place finish yesterday.”

The Medaglia d’ Oro colt, winner of the Grade I Cash Call Futurity and unbeaten in three starts before yesterday, earned 20 points in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” standings for his runner-up effort. That moved him into third place in the standings with 30 points.

According to James R. Rooney's "The Lame Horse," a lesion of the sesamoid occurs when there is improper movement of the fetlock joint. As a general rule, it happens when the leg is retracting faster than the body of the horse is moving forward and often happens on turns when the outside leg is moving faster than the inside one in order to bend the horse around the turn.

Violence isn't scheduled for surgery, but his racing career is in doubt. Further information on his prognosis will be available after he arrives in Kentucky.
