Todd Pletcher and Bob Baffert have 11 of the 23 individual interests in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager which opens this Friday.
But for the defection of Violence from the Derby Trail this week, the pair of trainers would have a majority of the individual spots on the program of 24.
The field, representing all other 3-year-olds, has been set at 3-1 by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. Co-favored among individual horses at 10-1 are Baffert’s Super Ninety Nine (Grade III Southwest Stakes winner) and Pletcher’s Verrazano (undefeated in two starts).
Other individuals who are expected to draw strong support include these set at 12-1: Baffert’s unbeaten Flashback (Grade II Robert B. Lewis winner), Itsmyluckyday (Grade III Holy Bull winner), a Orb (Grade II Fountain of Youth winner) and Revolutionary (Grade III Withers winner).
Reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby, Grade II San Vicente winner Shakin It Up and Normandy Invasion are set at 15-1.
Betting in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager will open this Friday at Noon ET and close the following Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Wagers can be made at racetracks and off-track betting centers throughout North America, including TwinSpires.com, the advance deposit wagering outlet for Churchill Downs.
Along with Verrazano, the six Pletcher trainees in Pool 2 are Shanghai Bobby, Revolutionary, Palace Malace (30-1), Overanalyze (20-1) and Delhomme (50-1). Baffert has Super Ninety Nine, Flashback, Shakin It Up, Code West (20-1) and Den’s Legacy (50-1).
Pool 2 includes six that were not individual betting interests in Pool 1: Ive Struck A Nerve (30-1), Orb, Palace Malice, Shakin It Up, Titletown Five (30-1) and Treasury Bill (30-1).
Horses that were in Pool 1 not in Pool 2 are Capo Bastone, Frac Daddy, He's Had Enough, Mylute, Will Take Charge and Violence.
Pool 1 attracted $621,493 from Feb. 8-10 – the second-largest wagering total in an individual pool since the bet was introduced in 1999.
The individual wagering interests for the three KDFW 2013 pools are chosen by a committee made up by Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form; Brisnet.com Marketing Director Ed DeRosa; and Churchill Downs’ John Asher.
