Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Thursday Morning's Derby Trail Notes

Highlights from updates to our Looking Good, Worth Watching and Just In Case pages. Refer to those pages for details.

Chad Brown won't start either BALANCE THE BOOKS (Worth Watching) or NOBLE TUNE (Worth Watching) in Sunday's 1 1/8-mile, Grade III Palm Beach. The former spiked a fever last week and is now being pointed to the Grade III Spiral; Brown is looking for something shorter for the latter's 2013 debut.

Steve Asmussen's CARVE (Just In Case), looking like a good claim, Tuesday breezed nine days after his Oaklawn allowance win, four in :52.20 (14/14).

Wayne Lukas' CHANNEL ISLE (Just In Case) may try the Grade III Spiral Stakes next, and he won't race in the 1 1/16-mile, Grade II Rebel. “They (Channel Isle and Optimizer) are very similar horses, so I think we might try the Spiral,” said Lukas. “He’s got that good turf pedigree, and with the way they’re supposed to adapt to the ‘poly’, we figure we can fool around with it and see what we get. I can tell you this for sure, his next race has to be at least a mile-and-an-eighth. He wants more ground.” Is the 1 3/16 Mile UAE Derby on March 30 possible? Channel Isle is nominated to it.

Rick Violette's CLAWBACK (Just In Case) will bypass the Grade III Gotham and run a week later in the six-furlong Cappy Capossela at Aqueduct.

Todd Pletcher's DOHERTY (Just In Case) and Mark Casses' GUNDERMAN (Just In Case) are entered in a 1 1/8-mile allowance at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Race 4.

Lukas' TITLETOWN FIVE (Just In Case) and Cecil Borel's MALIBU HIGH (Just In Case) are entered in The Gazebo Stakes at Oaklawn on Saturday. Race 8.

Jerry Hollendorfer's ZEEWAT (Just In Case), who failed to fire in the El Camino Real Derby, yesterday worked four in :49.60 (5/14) at GG. Quiet day on tab.
