Derby Future Wager: Pool 2, Day 1 Closes With Field at 8-5

By Dick Downey

Despite early action on Verrazano, the All Others betting interest, 3-1 on the morning line, was the strong 8-5 favorite when the opening day of Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 closed.

Only two horses in Pool 2 are racing this weekend: Overanalyze and Vyjack, 5-2 and 3-1 respectively in the Grade III Gotham Stakes morning line. However, at the close of Day 1, Vyjack led the pair at 23-1. Overanalyze was 41-1.
Kentucky Derby fans wagered $62,287 on the first day of betting in the Derby Future pool.  Friday’s  total included $49,937 in win wagers and $12,350 in exactas.
Verrazano, the 10-1 co-favorite in the morning line, was 8-5 in early action, but he stood at his morning line odds at Friday's close.  One of six horses in the pool trained by Todd Pletcher, Verrazano was ahead of three horses at 12-1: Flashback, Itsmyluckyday and Orb.
Following that group at 13-1 was Revolutionary and Super Ninety Nine at 18-1. Shanghai Bobby closed the day at 20-1, and Normandy Invasion stood at 26-1.

All Others closed Pool 1 this year at 8-5. But in Pool 2, that bet has traditionally been at higher odds. In 2012, the bet closed Pool 2 at 5-2, in 2011 it was 7-2, in 2010 it was 3-1 and in 2009 the wager was 9-2 at the close of Pool 2.
