Derby Future Wager: Field Closes at 3-1, Verrazano 9-1

Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday with the field favored at 3-1 and the fourth-best handle in the 15-year history of the wager.

Set to pay $8.60 if any of the 23 individuals in the wager don't win the Kentucky Derby, the all others bet finished on a level consistent with the past few years.

The pool total handle of $407,038 was the third largest in the history of the wager sponsored by Churchill Downs. Win bets totalled $287,611, and $119,427 was put down on exactas. Added to $621,493 in Pool 1, the total handle so far this year is $1,028,531. Pool 3 runs March 22-24.

The record for Pool 2 handle was set in 2005, with $511,655 bet that year. The next best years were 2006 ($464,236), 2012 ($411,368) and 2013.

Leading individual horses in the middle leg of the wager were Verrazano (9-1), Vyjack (11-1), Orb (12-1), Flashback (12-1), Itsmyluckyday (13-1) and Revolutionary (15-1).

Leading the Kentucky Oaks Pool were Flashy Gray at 6-1 and all others at 7-1. Behind them were Beholder (8-1), Unlimited Budget (9-1), Pure Fun (10-1) and Emollient (11-1).

The Oaks Future Wager handled $126,038, a record, up 36.3% from last year's $92,476. Single pool record was $117,368 in 2003.
