Sunday Morning's Derby Trail Notes

3/3/2013

Highlights from updates to our Looking Good, Worth Watching and Just In Case pages. Refer to those pages for details.

Wow, looking back on it today, there was a really rough start for a lot of runners in the GOTHAM STAKES, and runner-up West Hills Giant was the primary cause. He eliminated a lot of the competition from the get-go. Multiple runners were bumped, turned sideways, or clipped heels after West Hills Giant and Jose Espinoza veered in leaving the gate from post 10. Some of the also-rans will have to be given another chance due to this unfortunate circumstance. Third finisher Elnaawi ran really well to accomplish what he did.

His connections are from New York, and he's still based in South Florida, but Domick Schettino's ALWAYS IN A TIZ (Worth Watching) remains on course for the Rebel at Oaklawn. He was returned to Florida after the Smarty Jones but remained at Oaklawn after the Southwest. “He scoped clean, and the lung infection appears to be completely cleared up," said trainer Dominick Schettino. "I worked him in blinkers, and I’m hoping to send him one more time – a half-mile – in blinkers next week to get him ready. We are also hoping it doesn’t rain again, but what can you do?”

Eddie Kenneally on MAJESTIC HUSSAR (Just In Case): "...we haven’t decided where we’re going with Majestic Hussar just yet. He came out of the (Fountain of Youth) fine, but we’ll take a little more time to decide what direction we go with him from here.”

Today, Todd Pletcher's SHANGHAI BOBBY (Looking Good) breezed five in 1:00.80 (10/21) at PMM.

Danele Durham's TEXAS BLING (Just In Case) may show that his ninth-place finish in the Southwest Stakes was mostly due to the sloppy track that day. Saturday he posted his second work since that race, a five-furlong breeze in 1:01. “It was another excellent work,” said trainer Durham. “It was just a maintenance work. I wanted him to do a little more last week (when he worked a bullet) because he got nothing out of the race. We’ll probably come back next Saturday for another work before the Rebel.” Added his jockey, Cliff Berry: “He went fast. A horse broke off in front of him and he took off after him, so it was probably faster than Danele wanted, but he’s good.”

Today, Todd Pletcher's VERRAZANO (Looking Good) breezed four in :48.20 (9/51) at PMM.
