Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Saturday Morning's Derby Trail Notes

3/9/2013

Highlights from updates to our Looking Good, Worth Watching and Just In Case pages. Refer to those pages for details.

Calvin Borel will breeze ALWAYS IN A TIZ (Worth Watching) on Saturday at Oaklawn; they are pointing to the Rebel. Paco Lopez has been riding Always in a Tiz.

Nick Zito on DECLAN'S WARRIOR (Just In Case), entered today in a Gulfstream Park allowance: “I’m excited about him. Not as a potential Derby horse, but maybe a horse that could come around a little later like Bernardini did and take those big steps up each time. You have to look at some of these allowance races for 3-year-olds here at this time of year as if they were a graded stakes.”

John Sadler's DEMONIC (Worth Watching) Thursday worked for the first time since Feb. 11, four in :48.00 (1/14) at BHP.

Next race for DEPARTING (Worth Watching): the Grade II Louisiana Derby on March 30.

Ken McPeek's FRAC DADDY (Worth Watching) Thursday breezed for the second time since Feb. 9, five in :58.40 (1/25) at GP.

“I’ve been working him, and he’s been working good,” Joe Talamo said of OMEGA STAR (Worth Watching).  “I really didn’t know too much about him before I worked him, but John’s been putting him two or three lengths behind another horse. He said he could get rank in some of his races, like in his last two, but he’s been very relaxed behind horses when I’ve worked him. When I ask him, he really explodes and has a nice turn of foot.”

“It’s a pretty tough race, obviously, with Goldencents and Flashback, but this race should definitely give us a good read on Omega Star,” Talamo said. “I’ve watched all his replays and he’s a real nice horse with a bright future. He’ll get tested Saturday, that’s for sure.”

Edgar Prado will ride PALACE MALICE (Worth Watching) in the Louisiana Derby on March 30. Rosie Napravnik rode him in the Risen Star but will be on SHANGHAI BOBBY (Looking Good) in the Florida Derby on March 30. “Our horse is doing great,” said Dogwood Stable's Cot Campbell. “He’s been getting a little gate schooling lately because he was somewhat of a reluctant load at Fair Grounds last month and also at Saratoga last summer. I think the plan Todd has right now for him is to breeze him a half on Sunday and then next Sunday go five-eighths with Edgar aboard."

ODDITIES

Despite having 10 starters in the Tampa Bay Derby since 2000, Limehouse is Todd Pletcher's only winner. From those starters, he's saddled six runners-up – including four in a row from 2006-09 – two third-place finishers, and last year’s fourth-place finisher, favorite Spring Hill Farm.

Street Sense, the 2007 winner, holds the stakes record of 1:43.11. He's the last horse to win the Tampa Bay Derby without benefit of a previous race at the track.

LISTS

Added For Greater Glory to Just In Case. He finished a troubled third, beaten a length, in the Battaglia Memorial. Connections plan to run him back in the Spiral on March 23.

Added Raise Yourglass to Just In Case. He was a debut winner at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 16, was purchased by Darwin Krenz and his family, was put in the hands of Ken McPeek and is probable for the Rebel Stakes.

Deleted Majestic Hussar from Just In Case. He's been sent to the farm after a hard race in the Fountain of Youth, running the first six furlongs in a crazy 1:08.85. Connections looking to a Summer campaign. Bradester (previously deleted) also sent to the farm by Eddie Kenneally.
