Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Thursday Morning's Derby Trail Notes

3/21/2013

Highlights from updates to our Looking Good, Worth Watching and Just In Case pages. Refer to those pages for details.

Rick Violette's CARRIED INTEREST (Just In Case) will make his second start of the year in a 6 1/2-furlong entry level allowance on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Race 5.

Steve Asmussen's CARVE (Just In Case) will start next in either the Arkanas Derby or the Northern Spur on the undercard.

Barclay Tagg's INDY'S ILLUSION (Just In Case) Friday worked five days after his last one, five in 1:00.80 (2/8), breezing, at PMM.

“The race before this, he got his tongue over the bit after his tongue tie fell off in the post parade and had a horrible trip. He didn’t even run into the first turn,” Carl Nafzger told DRF.com about LOOKING COOL (Worth Watching). “That race put us way behind schedule. If he had run well there, we’d have come back in the Fountain of Youth.” But as things stand, it looks unlikely Nafzger will try to get Looking Cool to the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Bob Hess said he has no intention of putting MERIT MAN (Just In Case) on the Kentucky Derby Trail beyond the Florida Derby. “This is a one-time deal, he said. "Like I mentioned, the first time is a sprinter’s best route. We’ve been very successful. Not with a closing sprinter; closing sprinters are closing sprinters. But speed sprinters in their first two-turn start will defy reality often times. They get out there, slow down and keep going.”

Dale Romans' PICK OF THE LITTER (Just In Case) Wednesday worked toward the Florida Derby, five in :59.00 (1/15), handily, at GP. Said to be definite now.

Paul Aguirre's TIZ A MINISTER (Worth Watching) Wednesday worked for the first time since the March 9 San Felipe, four in :49.60 (12/16) at BHP.

DIDN'T MAKE IT IN

Needing defections in the Spiral Stakes, but not getting them, were RED WINGS (not listed), DIVINE AMBITION (Just In Case) and CROP REPORT (Worth Watching). They were entered in Rushaway Stakes. CERRO (Just In Case), also said to need a Spiral defection, didn't make the race and wasn't entered in the Rushaway either.
