Verrazano on Cusp of Leading All
By Dick Downey
Verrazano is one day away from being the overall fans’ choice in Pool 3, and the individual choice in all three pools of the 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
The son of More Than Ready closed day 2 as the 6-1 favorite, and All Others was the 8-1 second choice.
Day 1 ended with Verrazano as the favorite, but he was in a virtual deadlock with the mutuel field at 5-1. Verrazano's morning line was set at 7-2. Verrazano led all individuals in Pool 1 at 11-1 and in Pool 2 at 9-1.
Wagering in Pool 3 is set to resume at Noon ET on Sunday, March 24 and will conclude the same day at 6:00 p.m. ET.
Total wagering over two days of Pool 3 stood at $195,404 heading into Sunday’s finale. Of that total, $129,503 had been wagered to win along with $65,901 in exacta bets.
At the end of Day 2, Itsmyluckyday was third choice at 10-1, and Revolutionary was next at 11-1. Orb and Vyjack both stood at 12-1, with Orb holding a narrow edge in total betting. Reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby was a 14-1 shot, with Hear the Ghost next at 15-1 and Pool 3 newcomer War Academy well-backed at 16-1. Oxbow and Flashback were next at 18-1. Normandy Invasion and Will Take Charge were 19-1.
Each Kentucky Derby Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Derby Future Wager, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.
