Less than three weeks out from the Kentucky Derby, probable entries for the Grade III Coolmore Lexington Stakes are taking shape, and the result could affect the makeup of the field for the Kentucky Derby.
Keeneland stakes coordinator Scott Jones has a list of 10 probables and one possible for the 1 1/16-mile race.
The Coolmore Lexington is one of two remaining qualifying races to the Kentucky Derby. It has 34 points available -- 20 going to the winner, eight to second, four to third and two to fourth. The final qualifying race is the Grade III Derby Trial the following Saturday.
Horses considered as probable for the race include Cerro (IRE), Examen, Hip Four Sixtynine, Johnny Handsome, Pick of the Litter, the filly Pure Fun, Taken by the Storm, Title Contender, Where’s Dominic and Winning Cause. Considered as possible is Forty Tales. Notable by his absence is Dewey Square. Steve Byk reports that Dewey Square is going to the Illinois Derby.
Entries will be taken Wednesday.
Taken by the Storm has five points now and could surpass current20-point horses only by winning. He finished fourth in the Grade III Spiral.
None of the other probables have any Derby points.
The Lexington's purse is $200,000, with $120,000 to the winner. A winning horse with no prior Derby points would tie several other horses that have 20 points now -- but would have to come into the race with more than $86,000 in non-restricted stakes earnings in order to pass up Charming Kitten. The latter horse leads all 20-point horses in such earnings that are or could be pointing to the Derby.
