Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Upcoming Derby Workouts and Arrivals

4/19/2013

At least four workouts for the Kentucky Derby are set to take place on Sunday.

According to Churchill Downs, set to work Sunday at the track are Mylute, trained by Tom Amoss,  Normandy Invasion (Chad Brown), Revolutionary and Verrazano (both trained by Todd Pletcher).

Comprehensive Derby Points Chart

Orb is scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs on Monday after breezing that morning at Palm Meadows for trainer Shug McGaughey. He would have one more workout at Churchill about a week later.

Vyjack, who breezed a leisurely four furlongs at Fair Hill Training Center this morning under Rudy Rodriguez, is scheduled to leave Maryland by van on Saturday afternoon and arrive at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning. He'll be put in Dale Romans' barn. The breeze was timed in :51.60 (10/10).

Code West has taken up residence at Churchill Downs. He's in Bob Baffert's barn 33. There's still no word on his next start, but something is expected next week. Code West, most recently sixth in the Grade II Louisiana Derby, is number 21 on Churchill Downs' official Kentucky Derby list. Baffert has said he's pointing to either the Grade II Peter Pan on May 11 or the May 4 Kentucky Derby.

Baffert also trains Super Ninety Nine, number 19 on the list. A decision for him will be coming soon, too. A defection would move Code West up to number 20 -- if Baffert's Den's Legacy isn't added back to the list. If included on it, he would be number 20 right now. Den's Legacy finished sixth in the Grade I Arkansas Derby and was flown back to California instead of to Kentucky as originally planned.

With the addition of Code West, that's 16 horses confirmed or potentially set for the Kentucky Derby on the grounds of Churchill Downs more than two weeks before the race. It's been a long time since the track has seen this many Derby runners that far in advance.
